MY NAME IS THIRA (OFFICIAL NAME)OR WELL KNOWN AS SANTORINI ISLAND. Born in the lost city of Atlantic from volcanic magma and sea water. My life starts 700.000 years a go after an explosion that forced me to provide my dry but mysterious body. My name is Kallisti (most beautiful), Strongili (the round or circle), Thira (name comes from the King Thira, King of Sparta), Santorini (from Santa Erin named by Romans). My body have been ripped by Phoenicians, Egyptians, Ionians, Dories, Minoans, Spartans, Persians, Athenians, Romans, Slaves, Pirates, Byzantines, Ottomans, Venetians, Franks, Italians, Germans and finally liberated to become an island of Hellenic Democracy (Greece). THIS PAGE IS REPRESENTED BY CHRISTO GEO. THE ISLAND OF THIRA. Santorini is located in the southern Aegean's Cyclades islands, curves round a giant lagoon, a caldera left by a volcanic eruption. The island's capital, Fira, clings to cliffs above, providing stunning views of the lagoon below. Santorini's nightlife has become as hot as its volcanic past. Ruins, including the volcanic ash- preserved town of ancient Akrotiri, amaze those with a bent for ancient history. Flights, Hydrofoils, ferries and catamarans connect Santorini to other islands and the mainland. G E O G R A P H Y. The world famous island of Santorini is the southern most island of the Cycladic group in the Aegean Sea, and is located 63 nautical miles north of Crete. A R E A - P O P U L A T I O N. Its surface area is 73 sq. km. Its shores are 70 km long. The length of Santorini reaches 18 km. Its width varies from 2 to 6 km. Santorini has 13 (thirteen) villages and its population, just exceeds 17.600 souls, according to the census of 2006.during the summer time however this number mounts to about 26.000 people. W E A T H E R. The weather in Santorini from April to October is bright and sunny, but a sweater/jacket is advised as evenings often bring cooler temperatures. VOLCANIC ACTIVITY. The present-day crescent shape of the island is a consequence of the activity of the volcano in prehistoric times. The island itself owes its very existence to the volcano. The last huge eruption of the volcano dates back 3,600 years, in the late bronze age. Thirty million cubic meters of magma in the form of pumice and ash were blown to a height of up to 36 kilometers above the island. Pumice deposits, dozens of meters thick, buried one of the most prosperous pre-historic settlements of that period, feeding the myth of lost Atlantis. The texts where the Name Atlantis itself occurs came to us by Plato (427-347 BC). He tells us in great detail the story of a high-standing, flourishing civilization with divine origins that lived on an island or a small continent outside the columns of Hercules. The race of the Atlantians was strong and healthy, had all the virtues and lived in peace, as long as the portion of their divine nature still was strong. With time though it faded and was more and more diluted. THE MYTH. "And Poseidon, receiving for his lot the island of Atlantis, begat children by a mortal woman…. Looking towards the sea there was a plain which is said to have been the fairest of all plains and very fertile… there dwelt one of the earth born primeval men of that country, whose name was Evenor, and he had a wife named Leucippe, and they had an only daughter who was called Cleito… Poseidon fell in love with her and had intercourse with her, and breaking the ground, enclosed the hill in which she dwelt all round, making alternate zones of sea and land larger and smaller… He begat and brought up five pairs of twin male children; dividing the island of Atlantis … he gave to the first-born of the eldest pair his mother's dwelling and the surrounding allotment, which was the largest and best, and made him king over the rest… the eldest, he named Atlas, and after him the whole island and the ocean were called Atlantic." In this island of Atlantis there was a great and wonderful empire which had rule over the whole island and several others... there occurred violent earthquakes and floods; and in a single day and night of misfortune all your warlike men sank into the earth, and the island of Atlantis in like manner disappeared in the depths of the sea. 1. Plato tells about a circular island with concentric structures. Santorini today does have an impressive concentric geographic setting and had it also before the Minoan eruption.. 2. Plato writes that Atlantis was situated in the ocean, beyond the "Pillars of Hercules". The "Pillars of Hercules" were at Plato's time the Straits of Gibraltar and this would put Atlantis into the Atlantic Ocean. But further, Plato tells that Atlantis was bigger than Libya and Asia together. It is possible that Solon or Plato were misinterpreting their old sources and that somewhere in the chain of the oral or written tradition of the report, the Greek word for "bigger than" ("mezon") was accidentally changed to the very similar "between" ("meson"). If this was the case, Atlantis could be identical with Santorini. Besides, it is geologically not possible that a large continent could have disappeared in a very short time span. There is nowhere on earth such evidence. 3. Some details of Plato's story are clearly describing volcanic phenomena. Such are the colors Plato describes of being typical of the rocks of Atlantis: black (lava), white (pumice and ash) and red (lava). These are the colors of Santorini! The warm and cold springs are typical of volcanic places and still found on Santorini today. Another hint is the mentioned mud that remained at the site of Atlantis. It is enough to translate mud with the enormous masses of pumice and ash from the eruption that floated on the sea. 4. Some historians argue that the date for the destruction of Atlantis Plato gives as 9000 years before his time should be read as 900 years.
