North Carolina novelist Sarah Addison Allen brings the full flavor of her southern upbringing to bear on her fiction -- a captivating blend of fairy tale magic, heartwarming romance, and small-town sensibility.

...Her entrancing brand of magic realism nimbly blends the evanescent desires of hopeless romantics with the inherent wariness of those who have been hurt once too often.
Booklist (Starred review)

...Like a dessert you'd scorn for being too sweet but would devour anyway.
Entertainment Weekly

...The blending of horticultural folklore, the supernatural and a big dollop of Southern flavor should find favor with a wide swath of readers.
Publishers Weekly

(She) uses magic to captivating effect.

i read suger queen on my holiday and i must say, very clever ;o)

I was never the kind of person to just read for the fun of it. If it wasn't something that I had to read in class I wouldn't even dream of picking it up. But last fall a friend of mine who always has a different book in her hand told me that I just had to read a book her aunt gave her called "The Sugar Queen". She said that it reminded her of my mother and I. (I later found out that she was a little off on that) lol
I huffed and puffed and finally gave in. Within just the first chapter I was hooked. I started growing attached to the characters, really caring for them like I never had. It was so easy to read and I related to Josie so much.
This book has now become my favorite book and i have bought it for friends and told so many people about how wonderful it is. Your writing has made me a book person and I thank you for that. I have read book after book after reading The Sugar Queen but couldn't really fall in love with another book like I did it. So I looked up other works of yours and finally got "Garden Spells" which I just finished last week. It was also amazing. So magical and really fun to read. I got a little embarrassed reading a few parts haha but it was still great. lol

So thanks again and i can't wait to read your next book. Keep up the great work!

    God bless ya,
    IZZY

You have quickly become one of my favorite author. You write such believable and inspiring characters, yet never stray from the whimsy that make your stories so fantastic. I was lucky enough to get my hands on an advanced reader's copy of the sugar queen and scarfed down garden spells shortly after. I cannot wait for the next novel!
