Sounds Like
A Spanish, Jewish, Middle-Eastern Rock Band. Think Ofra Haza meets Shakira.
Sarah Aroeste is the founder of the NY-based Ladino Rock group, the Sarah Aroeste Band. American-born Aroeste, with family roots that go back to Spain and more recently to Salonika, Greece, launched her band to help bring Sephardic music to a new generation. Most influenced by the music and language of her Spanish origins, Aroeste grounds her music in Ladino , an ethnic form of Castilian Spanish developed by Spanish Jews after their expulsion from Spain in 1492. Although this mysterious pan-Mediterranean language has, unfortunately, been fading away, the musical legacy of Spanish Jews highlights the strength of an oral tradition that spans many centuries and crosses many geographic boundaries. Determined to help keep Ladino music alive, Aroeste updates and reinterprets the tradition by fusing it with more modern sensibilities. With its unique Ladino Rock sound, the Sarah Aroeste Band takes traditional Ladino music from across the Mediterranean and combines it with contemporary influences such as rock, funk, and blues. Since Aroeste launched her band in 2001, she has toured internationally and amassed a loyal following across the globe, and has worked hard to bring an updated, exciting new sound to Ladino and Sephardic music.
Our latest album Puertas! Puertas continues along the path that we started from our debut album A la Una: In the Beginning, and shows an even more pronounced mix of traditional Ladino sounds with contemporary and rock influences.
The album was co-produced with Grammy Award-winning and critically acclaimed musician/producer Frank London (Klezmatics, Hassidic New Wave), and features many great guest artists including a remix engineered by Balkan Beat Box leader, Tamir Muskat. With 10 new tracks on the album with sounds ranging from funky pop beats, to flamenco-style strumming, hard electric rock riffs and driven Middle Eastern rhythms, Puertas shows the unique qualities of what is traditional and new in Sephardic music.
The Forward (July 31, 2007) calls Puertas a "thrilling new album" and one that "is an argument about Ladino music’s future."
The Jerusalem Post (January 2, 2008) says Puertas has "loads of New York sass and edgy attitude."
Inside World Music (June 1st, 2008) says Sephardic music is underrepresented, but that "Sarah Aroeste and her band are going to change that."

Sarah Aroeste launches new project with acclaimed Cuban musician Roberto Rodriguez!
Over the past year, Aroeste and Rodriguez have teamed up to create a project of all original, Sephardic-inspired, Cuban-infused music. They recently performed in Havana, Cuba together and are now hard at work recording a demo of their music. They have also launched a project together to build 8 JEWISH MUSIC LIBRARIES in CUBA. Click here to learn more about their Cuba Jewish Music Library (CJML) project (or read more in the blog above), and check back soon for more info on the demo...
In the meantime, the New York Daily News (November 12, 2008) says about the project that "Aroeste has dedicated herself to keeping Ladino music alive and building bridges with non-Jewish Latino musicians... [She wants] to bring Sephardic music outside of the Jewish world..and to a bigger audience."
The Forward newspaper also recently featured Aroeste & Rodriguez and their Cuba Jewish Music Library project (March 6th, 2009). Click to read!
