Celtic whistle and flute player Sarah Bauhan has released her fourth CD, “Lathrop’s Waltz.”
Bauhan lives in the Portsmouth, N.H., area, and has three other CDs to her credit: "Chasing the New Moon," "The Untamed Grasses" and "Broad Waters." She represented New Hampshire at the 1999 Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington, D.C.
Beautifully played and carefully arranged, Lathrop’s Waltz is a collection of mostly contemporary tunes that capture the sometimes buoyant, often haunting spirit of the Celtic musical tradition. Bob Walton of Folk Roots Magazine has written that Sarah’s music “isn’t brash, in-yer-face or edge of the seat stuff, but lovely, thoughtful music… like liquid spring sunshine.”
Lathrop’s Waltz, dedicated to the memory of Bauhan’s father, features a cadre of friends whose expert musicianship rounds out this fine album, including Marko Murray on guitar and Kent Allyn ..boards and bass. This album also introduces the velvet voice of Chloe Green and the uncanny artistry of 12 year-old fiddle-player Emma Clarkson. “She is grateful for all the generosity shown to her when she was starting out, and she takes an opportunity here to keep it in motion. A reel, Off to California, begins with Sarah on flute and the fiddle played by 12-year old Emma Clarkson,” writes Gordon Peery of the Monadnock Folklore Society. “And those who are familiar with Bauhan’s previous albums will recognize Jane Orzechowski’s fiddle, Iain Bain’s highland pipes, Kirsty Anderson’s harp, and David Surette’s mandolin.”
Praise for Sarah Bauhan’s work:
Gail Kelley, the Boston Globe: “She has few equals among American Celtic Flutists and whistlers.”
Tim Burrows, Folk Roots: “She’s clearly been a stalwart of New England sessions for quite awhile. It shows in her playing which is fluid, tasteful and assured…”
Hi Sarah, Nice to see you here. We met a couple of years ago in Sandy Bell's in Edinburgh and I'm still thinking about the tunes you played then! I enjoy your music.
