I have been writing songs for as long as I can remember. I am sure a lot of people say that, but anyone that has every been in my car, bedroom, workspace, etc knows that you will find napkins, receipts, and anything that can be written on filled with words. I remember one time when I was really young, I asked a friend if she ever had a song just pop into her head. She said, "Sure, like the songs on the radio?" I explained to her that these were my own thoughts and music was mixed in there too. She of course looked at me like I was crazy, and I then realized that everyone didn't just walk around with noise in their head.
I was fortunate to grow up in a house with a really amazing guitar player, who also happened to be my Dad. One day I got up the courage to sing him some of the words and melodies that had come to me, and my first song was born. It was a really sad heartbreak song, which was interesting because I had never even kissed a boy! It's really funny that my first song was slow and sad, because I am probably one of the few songwriters that you know that actually writes more upbeat material than ballads. I take my heartbreaks in life all the time, so I prefer music that takes me away from the sad thoughts and makes me want to laugh, dance, and just have a good time!!
Tom Collins- My friend Susan and I were hanging out in our dorm Senior year, and I got this chorus stuck in my head. We started talking about our favorite bar called Cool Beans ( all my UT peeps know what I'm talking about). I would always drag myself into work after a big night out there, and we decided to write this song about how I should get fired for my behavior!
Live Before I Die- This song is special to me, because I wrote it when I was thinking about moving to Nashville. I was a year out of college, and completely miserable working the 9 to 5. I hope it encourages people to take chances and to realize that your best days are ahead of you if you choose to live your life for you, and not what you think other people expect from you.
Can't Go Back to Loving You- This song was a co-write with one of my first friends in Nashville, Ty Smith. Ty had this incredible melody, and the words were everything I was feeling at the time. Thanks Ty!!
Love is Hell- I believe in love I really do. At least I want to! This song came about after a really bad New Years. I hope I find love someday, but if I have to go through the heartbreaks to write the songs then that is just fine by me.
Thanks for stopping by!!!!
