Born in France in 1980, Sarah Hammel took up the cello at the age of 8 and studied at the Conservatoire of Bordeaux (France) with Etienne Peclard. After obtaining a Gold Medal in cello (1998), chamber music and music theory (1999) at the Conservatoire, she went on to do her undergraduate studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London (RAM) with renowned cellists Colin Carr and Philip Sheppard, graduating with a Bachelors of Music with first honours in June 2003. She was awarded the Art of Teaching diploma with LRAM in May 2002 and taught at the Junior Royal Academy of Music in 2002-2003. The following year, as the recipient of a Rotary International ambassadorial scholarship, she studied in the Master’s program of the Yale University School of Music with Aldo Parisot.
Sarah has participated in many intensive courses and master classes with renowned cellists such as Roland Pidoux (Rambouillet, France), Gary Hoffman (Salzbourg), Shauna Rolston, Aldo Parisot (Banff, Canada), Bernard Greenhouse, Philippe Muller (Périgueux, France), Robert Cohen, Zara Nelsova and Jiri Barta (RAM, London). She also participated in the Academy of the Pablo Casals Festival (Prades, France).
Among Sarah’s appearances in France are an all-Beethoven programme with pianist Anna Saradjian at the annual music festival "Nuits Musicales de Beynac en Périgord" in 2001 and a recital with pianist Hervé N’Kaoua in 2003. While in London she performed regularly at the Royal Academy of Music in cello solos and in duets, as well as in the Royal Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir Colin Davis and Yann-Pascal Tortellier. Other performances with orchestras included the Jersey Symphony Orchestra, "Nights of Premières" Cello Extravaganza (Krystof Penderecki and Imant Raminsch conducting) at the Banff Centre for the Arts, Canada, Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine,, Aldeburgh Music Club Orchestra, and City Philharmonic Orchestra.. While at Yale University, Sarah participated in a joint performance with the Yale Symphony Music Orchestra and the Russian Chamber Orchestra at Carnegie Hall and recorded a CD for Naxos with The Yale Cellos.
Back in France since 2004, she played with the Ensemble de Violoncelles de Paris at the Connaissance des Jeunes Interprètes festival, an annual event promoting young talents in the southwest of France; performed with the Caravassilis Quartet at the Salle Cortot and the Adyar Theatre in Paris; participated in the Festival des Trois Cultures in Essaouira, Morocco; and played with the Musiche ensemble at the Opera Barga festival in Barga, Italy. Sarah made her début as a soloist with the Orchestre OstinaO directed by Simon Bernardini in April 2005. She has recently commissioned a new solo cello suite written for her by Canadian composer Constantine Caravassilis.
Sarah he has performed with the Orchestre National de Radio France, Ensemble Orchestral de Paris, the Opéra de Massy orchestra, and the Orchestre National de Cannes. Other venues in Paris include the Théâtre des Champs Elysée, Théâtre du Châtelet, Château de Versailles, Musée d'Orsay, and Palais des Congrès. She recently participated in a recording with the Ensemble Orchestral de Paris and gave a recital in San German, Puerto Rico.

L’année suivante, boursière du Rotary International, elle étudie avec Aldo Parisot à l'université de Yale aux Etats Unis en Masters (troisième cycle). Elle est membre fondateur du Quatuor Caravassilis, qui est admis en décembre 2005 dans la classe du Quatuor Ysaÿe au Conservatoire Supérieur de Paris.
A Londres Sarah joue régulièrement avec l'Orchestre Symphonique de la Royal Academy, notamment sous la direction de Yann-Pascal Tortellier et de Sir Colin Davis. Elle enseigne le violoncelle et la musique de chambre à la Junior Academy de cette école. Aux Etats Unis elle participe avec l'orchestre symphonique de l'université de Yale à un concert à Carnegie Hall et enregistre un disque pour le label Naxos avec l’ensemble The Yale Cellos. En France elle est invitée à se produire dans divers festivals en Dordogne, notamment "Lumière au Village" (les films des Frères Lumière) et "Les Nuits Musicales de Beynac". Elle fait partie de l'Ensemble de violoncelles de Paris (festival "Connaissance de Jeunes Interprètes" à Gavaudun, festival Nancyphonies, festival Amadeus à Genève), participe au festival "Printemps Musical des Alizes" à Essaouira (Maroc), et joue avec l’Ensemble le Musiche au festival Opera Barga (Italie). Elle fait ses débuts comme soliste avec l'Orchestre OstinatO sous la direction de Simone Bernardini à Paris en 2005.
L’année suivante elle joue au sein de plusieurs orchestres, dont l’Orchestre National de Radio France, l’Ensemble Orchestral de Paris, l’Orchestre de l’Opéra de Massy, l’Orchestre National de Cannes. En 2007-2008 elle se produit au Théâtre des Champs Elysée, au Théâtre du Châtelet, au Château de Versailles, au Musée d'Orsay, au Palais des Congrès et en Dordogne, participe au Festival des Arcs et à un enregistrement au sein de l’Ensemble Orchestral de Paris, et donne un récital à San German, Porto Rico. Le compositeur Constantine Caravassilis lui ecrit une Suite pour violoncelle seul.
Sarah a étudié, lors de nombreux stages et masterclasses au Canada, en Autriche, en Angleterre et en France, avec Gary Hoffman, Bernard Greenhouse, Philippe Muller, Roland Pidoux, Zara Nelsova, Aldo Parisot et Shauna Rolston.
