    ..The Ensemble Sarband stands for connection - and, indeed, the name itself is a word which stems from Oriental music theory and denotes the improvised linking of two compositions within a musical suite. Musical director Dr. Vladimir Ivanoff, who founded Sarband in 1986, connects cultures, people and epochs, as both a scholar and a musician: His programmes unite musicians from widely different cultures and backgrounds and mediate between past and present, Early Music and living traditions. .. In the world of Sarband, musicians from Bulgaria, Turkey, Lebanon, Iraq, Sweden, China, Great Britain, Japan, Italy and Germany perform together. The cooperation in the ensemble is not merely a fashionable crossover, but conceived as a continuous dialogue on equal terms. All artists unrestrictedly contribute their native traditions, their personal histories and their own creativity to the programmes. While today the religious, economic, cultural and political differences between the Orient and Occident are the focus of public attention, Sarband endeavours to show that music was always not mere decoration, but an enlightened means of mutual respect and can still be that in the present: an example for understanding and acceptance, a model of peace. .. Programmes with Early Music repertoires link historically informed European performance with the living traditions of the Mediterranean. In cooperations with other ensembles (for example the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, King's Singers, Concerto Köln, Modern String Quartet, Mystère des Voix Bulgares), differences between cultures and religions, between old and new are investigated. Here Sarband often likes to devote itselve to the Ottoman Empire as a culturally developed, tolerant political unity of many different peoples and religions with a rich musical heritage. In cooperations with other ensembles (for example the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, King's Singers, Concerto Köln, Modern String Quartet, Mystère des Voix Bulgares), differences between cultures and religions, between old and new are investigated. In various group sizes ranging from intimate ensembles to orchestras, Sarband’s programmes offer a wide range of atmospheres—meditative, thrilling, sometimes even humorous. What they have in common is the intention to demonstrate the peaceful coexistence of people and cultures and to make it perceptible to the senses. .. Sarband has received numerous awards, amongst them a Grammy Nomination 1992, the Echo Klassik 2003 and 2006, "Premio Mousiké 2007", and "German World Music Award 2008: Ruth 2008". .... SARBAND bedeutet Verbindung - das besagt schon der Name, der aus der nahöstlichen Musiktheorie stammt und für die improvisierte Brücke steht, die zwei Kompositionen miteinander verknüpft. Ensembleleiter Dr. Vladimir Ivanoff, der SARBAND 1986 gründete, ist als Forscher und Musiker ein Brückenbauer zwischen Kulturen, Menschen und Zeiten: Seine Programme vereinen Menschen aus den verschiedensten Kulturen und Hintergründen, vermitteln zwischen Vergangenheit und Gegenwart, Alter Musik und lebendigen Traditionen. .. In der Welt von SARBAND musizieren Künstler aus Bulgarien, der Türkei, dem Libanon, dem Irak, Schweden, China, England, Japan, Italien und Deutschland miteinander. Die Zusammenarbeit innerhalb des Ensembles ist kein modisches Crossover-Treffen, sondern kontinuierlich angelegt und ein gleichberechtigter Dialog. Jeder Künstler bringt uneingeschränkt seine heimische Tradition, seine eigene Geschichte und seine persönliche Kreativität in die Programme ein. Stehen heute meist die religiösen, wirtschaftlichen, kulturellen und politischen Differenzen zwischen Orient und Okzident im Vordergrund, so will Sarband zeigen, daß die Musik nicht nur Dekor, sondern weltoffenes Medium gegenseitigen Respekts war und auch heute noch sein kann: ein Beispiel für Verständnis und Anerkennung, ein Exempel des Friedens. .. Das Ensemble nimmt sein Publikum mit auf eine Reise durch Raum und Zeit, durch Religionen und Kulturen. Es ist eine Reise, auf der man die gewohnten Bahnen des Denkens und des Musikbetriebs hinter sich lassen kann, wenn man sich ganz auf die Botschaft von SARBAND einläßt. .. Programme mit Repertoire aus der Alten Musik verbinden die historische Aufführungspraxis Europas mit den lebendigen Traditionen des Mittelmeerraums. Hier widmet sich SARBAND immer wieder gerne dem Osmanischen Reich als kulturell hochstehendem, religiös tolerantem Vielvölkerstaat mit reichem musikalischem Erbe. In Kooperationen mit anderen Ensembles und Orchestern (u.a. Barocksolisten der Berliner Philharmoniker, Modern String Quartet, Chorus Sine Nomine, King’s Singers, Concerto Köln, Mystère des Voix Bulgares) werden - oft auf ironische Weise - Differenzen zwischen Kulturen (türkische und Wiener Walzer) und Religionen (jüdische, christliche und muslimische Psalmvertonungen), zwischen Alt und Neu (Guillaume de Machaut und Erik Satie) hinterfragt. Die vielfältigen Programme von SARBAND bieten - in verschiedenen Ensemblegrößen, die von intimen Besetzungen bis hin zum Orchester reichen - die unterschiedlichsten meditativen, mitreißenden, manchmal humorvollen Stimmungen. Gemeinsam ist ihnen immer die Intention, ein friedliches Zusammenleben der Menschen und Kulturen aufzuzeigen und sinnlich erfahrbar zu machen. ..
