Myths and Facts About Domestic Violence

MYTH: Violence is really only an isolated event. There isn't much of it happening.

REALITY: Between one million and four million women are abused by a partner each year in the United States.

MYTH: Domestic violence only happens to poor people or minorities.

REALITY: Abuse can happen in all types of households, in any kind of relationship (gay or straight, young or old) regardless of race, economic background or educational level.

MYTH: The victim makes the partner hit them by "getting in their face." They ask for it.

REALITY: Every relationship has arguments and stress, but most people don't hit others when they get angry. An abuser has limited skills to deal with stress. And no matter what, you can't control how someone else behaves.

MYTH: Victims of domestic violence never leave their abusers.

REALITY: Most victims try to leave their abusers several times. Because abusers use violence, financial control, or threats to hurt the children in order to keep the victim in the relationship, it takes an average number of 6 times before victims leave for good. ..

MYTH: The victim actually enjoys the attention, likes or needs the violence, or is "always a victim."

REALITY: Victims of domestic violence desperately want the abuse to end. Many victims call the police and seek help from family and friends to protect themselves. Some victims endure beatings to keep the abuser from attacking the children. The abuser's violence is the abuser's reponsibility.

MYTH: Low self-esteem causes victims to get involved in abusive relationships.

REALITY: Some victims may have low self-esteem as a result of being abused, but there is little to support the theory that low self-esteem causes victims to become involved in abusive relationships. Studies have shown that most survivors of domestic violence do not share common characteristics other than being female.

MYTH: The abuser is a sick or crazy monster, or is angry all the time.

REALITY: An abuser can be passive, a "nice person" who is generous to others and sensitive. Anyone could be an abuser. Abusers often have a Dr. Jeckyll/Mr. Hyde personality, where they act differently to their partner than they do to the rest of the world.

MYTH: Alcohol or substance abuse is the cause of violence.

REALITY: Most abusers hit whether drunk or sober, though substance use may increase the frequency or severity of violent episodes. Alcohol/substance abuse does not cause abusers to beat their partners, though it is frequently used as an excuse. Even if an abuser gets treatment for a drug or alcohol problem, the abuse may not go away because they are two separate problems.

Help is available to callers 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Hotline advocates are available for victims and anyone calling on their behalf to provide crisis intervention, safety planning, information and referrals to agencies in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Assistance is available in English and Spanish with access to more than 170 languages through interpreter services. If you or someone you know is frightened about something in your relationship, please call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233) or TTY 1-800-787-3224.

    Violence and More Violence....

Unlike sociopaths/psychopaths who simply cheat on their wives or defraud people, the violent ones tend to get the attention of law enforcement. Dr. Hare found that 25% of the men in a treatment program for wife assault were psychopaths. And, he says, about half of serial rapists are psychopaths.

Psychopaths make up 1% of the general population, but 25% of the prison population, according to Dr. Hare. "Violence is not uncommon among offender populations, but psychopaths still manage to stand out," he says. "They commit more than twice as many violent and aggressive acts, both in and out of prison, as do other criminals."

When they get out of jail, they often return to crime. "The recidivism rate of psychopaths is about double that of other offenders," Dr. Hare says. "The violent recidivism rate of psychopaths is about triple that of other offenders."

These people do not change. You will not be able to help them. If you see violence—any kind of violence—get away.

    Cut It Out...

is a program of the Salons Against Domestic Abuse Fund dedicated to mobilizing salon professionals and others to fight the epidemic of domestic abuse in communities across the United States. CUT IT OUT builds awareness of domestic abuse and trains salon professionals to recognize warning signs and safely refer clients to local resources.

    Why the Salon Professional

The relationship between a client and a salon professional is usually based on trust built up over time. Because of the intimate and nurturing nature of the relationship, a salon professional—who often sees a client on a regular basis—can often spot signs of physical abuse that others may never see. A change in a client’s behavior can also be easily recognized by a salon professional.

Research shows that most battered women never call the police or go to a shelter. However, they do usually talk about the abuse with someone they trust. Because salon professionals are skilled and experienced listeners who are personally interested in their clients, many women suffering from abuse feel comfortable confiding in them—even if the abused women would never tell anyone else. In addition, because a salon is usually an all-female environment, it may be one of the few places that a battered woman is allowed to go without her abuser.

Statistics indicate that one out of every three women is abused at some time in her life. Since salon professionals each see around 200 clients every 4 to 6 weeks, they potentially are in contact with a lot of abused women. They have a unique opportunity to reach victims that domestic violence professionals may never see. With proper training to recognize abuse and to steer victims to help, salon professionals can become invaluable and influential community partners in the fight against domestic abuse.

    Photobucket

Domestic violence is a term applied to a variety of behaviors, inclusive of, though not restricted to, physical violence, sexual violence, intimidation, stalking, economic abuse, and psychological/emotional abuse. The ultimate goal of the abuser in an domestically violent relationship is to gain control over the victim. When one person in a relationship repeatedly scares, hurts or puts down the other person, IT IS ABUSE. Abuse is much more than slapping or grabbing someone.

Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves like locked rooms and like books that are written in a very foreign tongue. Do not now seek the answers, which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will find them gradually, without noticing it, and live along some distant day into the answer.

My Story

He blew into my life like a tornado, and went out the same way. What happened in between is history -- but maybe it's worth repeating, just so others can know how it feels to lose yourself, over and over, drowning in love. And all it comes down to at the end is loss, loss of yourself and the man you love.

I fell in love with a Sociopath. Smarter now, than I was 4 years ago I know they can be reckless, impulsive, substance abusers, financial disasters, and can commit fraud, lie, and abandon loved ones without the blink of an eye. They can be aggressive, are usually irritable, and do not plan ahead nor do they have a life plan or achieve any goals. They stay this way for years despite consequences that are disastrous. They simply discard relationships and move to the next one. They cannot be fixed, not by you, not by me, not by a therapist or doctor, and not by themselves. They seldom even admit they have a problem.

Mental illness is classified into two types: neuroses and psychoses. All of us are neurotic to some degree, and we know we are. That is one important clue. We know we have shortcomings and we work on our problems because personal growth is important to us. The person with an illness classified as a psychosis such as the sociopath can seldom admit he has a problem and will never overcome his illness. He will spend his life lying, cheating, extorting, raging and manipulating, or worse, without guilt, remorse or shame.

This mental disorder cannot be fixed. Medication or therapy might lessen the symptoms, but it cannot be fixed, that is a fact, and these men will ruin your life if you stay.

I know you don’t want to hear it, but this is the truth. I too at one point did not want to believe this is the truth. You must leave the sociopath behind, turn your back on him, and get him out of your life. Easier said than done. Still finding my escape causes me daily pain and struggle.

Posting my story will give me great relief. Maybe I can save other girls from this Serial Dater who has spent his life conning other women, a man who robbed me of thousands of dollars and part of my soul. Realizing that this was, in fact, a form of abuse has helped me. He lived a secret, double life, and for the last two years, that was abuse of my trust and my life. I have made use of therapies used for battered women to begin to heal.

I am also taking him to court, making him accountable, and am probably the first person in his whole life to ever hold him accountable for all the money, my trust, my love, and the part of me that this sociopath took.

"The Forgiveness of Me"

I forgave a man who beat me

I never beat a man

I forgave a man that terrorized me

I never terrorized a man

I forgave a man who imprisoned me and robbed me of my soul

I forgave a man who took from me all I’d thought I owned

Long after I forgave this man

The only one that I thought was left to forgive

Was the woman sitting beneath my skin

The one that lost her soul

The woman who never beat a man

The woman who never terrorized another

The woman who never stole a thing

The woman who never robbed a man

She was much harder to forgive by far

Than the man who imprisoned her in his clutch

For it was she that had allowed somehow

This man to take so much

The day she finally forgave herself

That was true forgiveness she was told

That forgiveness of herself was worth more to her than Gold…

"If you want to punish a sociopath then you attack things a sociopath craves. You attack their vanity and you attack their desire to control people."

Photobucket

It is very difficult to recognize a sociopath but in a nutshell, a sociopath is a parasite. There is no help because a sociopath does not want to be helped. A socipath will attract you with his charm and bring you to his side, then he will toy with you, lie and show no remorse. Sometimes there will be a fake smile in his face while he engages in his malicious ways. When confronted, he will deny any responsibility, then back away from you and blame you for whatever wrong he did. What is worse, everybody will believe him because he is able to gain sympathy in a cunning and calculating way.

St. George City Victim Services

The St. George Police Department has a Victim Services unit, consisting of full time and part time advocates, as well as volunteers to assist victims of crime in the City of St. George. It is the goal of the staff to contact victims and assist them with referrals, resources and various types of protective orders. The advocates will assist with the completion of adult or child protective orders and stalking injunction requests for filing with 5th District Court. They will guide you through the process and often accompany victims to the hearings.

Information is available for victims of domestic violence, rape, assault, stalking, child abuse, harassment and other types of people crimes. Advocates often attend court proceedings and help the victim through the difficult and sometimes complicated process to which they are subjected. Our office works closely with other agencies in the city on behalf of our clients.

If you are a victim of a crime in the city of St. George or have any questions regarding the Victim Services unit, you can reach them Monday through Friday, 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. at (435) 627-4399. If you are calling outside of regular business hours, please leave your name and number and someone will return your call during the next business day.
