MUSIC FOR PEACE. Sarina simoom wishes that all music here contribute to the greater peace and well being of the world. May all Women, Men, Children, those suffering from Mental Illness, Anxiety, Depression, Suicidal Thinking, those suffering from Violence, Anger, War, Oppression, May they all be free of suffering and at Peace!
Some of our musical influences: Stevie Wonder, Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush, Gillian Welsh, and innumerous others.
Sarina simoom was created by Jenna Herbst in 1995 in Washington D.C. “Herbst is simply a luminous talent -- a concise player whose elastic vocal style recalls Kate Bush, a more melodic Kristin Hersh and the elusive sirens of all those Greek myths.” says Laura Bond of Westword Magazine. The band quickly found success and was playing clubs such as the Black Cat and 9:30 Club. In 1997 Jenna moved to Denver Colorado and drummer Todd Bills joined the band. The band released their first full length Thread Bone Bare in 2000 “With soaring vocals and the abandonment of traditional song structures, the band succeeds wildly in constructing its own quiet spectacle.” - Patrick Casey of the Westword.
After a five year hiatus Jenna started the band again with Todd and artist/bass player Wes Magyar. In 2008 Sarina simoom recorded The Fawn, a five song EP that captures the bands true sound. The Fawn was recorded live in the studio with very few overdubs. The band wanted to capture an honest raw sound for this EP. The results are exciting and beautiful. Here is what The Onion had to say: “With supple grace and all the lazy magic of a rock skipping across water...The Fawn dangles its legs in murky melancholy while keeping its chin up and its eyes bright...Jenna Herbst...miraculously manages to sound like no one but herself...” Sarina simoom has opened for such acts as Jonatha Brooke, Cat Power, and Laura Gibson.
