A HANDFUL OF INDIE WITH EASTERN PROMISE
FROM BALLS OUT ROCK'N'ROLL TO TRIPPED OUT EASTERN, EXPERIMENTAL PYSCH
'Glorious melodies and harmonies from psychedelic headliners, quite possibly demo of the year.' HALFMOON, LONDON
"Listened to 'Iodine' again, and I must say it's really wicked...Your track reminds me a bit of sonic youth but with infinitely better singing with tough sax break that made me think of X-Ray Spex. The whole thing sounds nervy, dislocated and very tense-just the way I like it!”
STEVE-C-SONIC - Asian Dub Foundation
'They sound like acoustic libertines adrift on the backwaters of Kerala, nice...... four minutes of one of the most herbal tracks ever, very mellow indeed. I feel I could play that for the next hour or so, but then I'd lose my job. She sounds brilliant, her name is Sujatha Menon and she's the lead singer of Satsangi.'
BOBBY FRICTION - BBC Asian Network
HEADLINES - ROLLING STONE MAGAZINE

Their latest video ‘The First Time’ has just been released.
SATSANGI STORY
‘Hailing from Trivandrum, Kerala in India and Leamington Spa U.K., Satsangi is a solid representative for global music.’ www.mtviggy.com
Sujatha Menon and John Herbert met at university, started writing songs, and started a band, which brings together eastern and western musical origins. The band is called Satsangi.
Sujatha grew up listening to classical Indian music at home and Spacemen3 at school. Now she studies yoga and vedanta in the Sivananda tradition, and when not rocking out, she teaches classical yoga, holistic fitness and art to specialist groups, including those with autism.
John’s background is in the visual arts and has exhibited internationally, including Prudential Arts Award winning exhibition 'Out of the Wood', and 'Pledge to Peace', a monument sited in Canterbury, funded by European Arts Festival and The British Councils in Moscow, Warsaw and Leipzeg. His musical journey began after hearing an old vinyl of ‘Dimples’ by John Lee Hooker.
Satsangi's early gigs were acoustic, but as the music evolved the amps simply got bigger! The search was on to experiment and bring something else into the mix. Soon Richard Heath joined and added saxophone.
Richard is a musician with diverse roots and influences in both rock and jazz. He spent much of the 1990's as a rare white face on the bhangra scene, and has played with members of The Specials and The Selecter. On drums Rob Barrett quotes his influences as John Bonham, Tim Alexander & Dave Grohl, probably aiming for ‘John Bonxanderohl’, whilst bassist Simon Demaine was introduced to rock music by his father and was brought up with Pink Floyd, King Crimson and Black Sabbath virtually from day one! Guitarist’ Washington Jon’ began his career in Miami bars and coffee houses at 16 playing blues, rock and folk. Jon has toured the US eastern seaboard as support act for Metallica and has also worked as technician/roadie for David Bowie, U2, The Pogues, and Neil Young. Jon is an adventurer who has completed the transatlantic crossing by sail and now seeks his fortune from different shores. The Satsangi ‘potion’ is complete, opposites can often attract and no more than when Sujatha’s sweeping melodies juxtapose in stark contrast to the jagged riffs of the band.
Like many UK bands, Satsangi’s roots are based in the experimental environment of art school and after some musical collaborative projects (Trikon - Sujatha, John & Paul) with video artist Paul Windridge, Paul became the ‘visual player’ with the band. He now produces moving-image projections for live shows, and videos for the songs. Paul attended art college and became a painter but now concentrates on moving image. He has shown his short films and videos in Festivals worldwide from London to New York, Paris and St Petersburg. He has also shown his work at the Tate Britain, on BBC Big Screens nationwide, BBC Electric Proms and at IMAX Birmingham.
Satsangi have gigged throughout the UK, supported The Kills during their 2008 UK tour. They are Carling Support finalists and have video’s broadcast globally on MTV networks, Sky TV, shown throughout the UK by the BBC Big Screens, and at Bombay Mix Film Festival, London. Recently Satsangi have been featured artists on the BBC Asian Network - The Bobby Friction Show, and in January 2009 ‘Iodine’ was first broadcast on MTV across the USA, Europe and Australia.
