In my book, there are two kinds of music: good music and bad music. Each one comes in all styles - there's great Rap and bad Classical. That said, I favor certain styles over others. Generally, I'm a sucker for Gothic/ Dark Romantic, Celtic Rock, World Fusion/ Worldbeat Techno, Old-School (70s-early 80s) Punk and Metal, Baroque Classical, Medieval Reconstruction, FolkPunk/ Americana, Motown, quirky artists who defy categorization, and the eclectic and energetic blend of styles from the late-60s-early 70s often called "Classic Rock."

For me, the most vital element of music is passion: the passion of the artists for their work, passion in the songcraft, passion flowing in between the musicians and their audience. Without that element, it's all just sound - pretty, perhaps, irritating maybe, but little more than that.

    My "old" favorites include:

Faith and the Muse, Dead Can Dance, Jethro Tull, Black Sabbath (first four albums + Heaven and Hell and Mob Rules), Oingo Boingo, Bella Morte, Rush, Judas Priest, The Plasmatics, Iron Maiden, The Sisters of Mercy, Loreena McKennitt, Oysterband, Kate Bush, The Damned, Afro-Celt Sound System, Beethoven, The Dead Kennedys, Gustav Holst, The Mediaeval Baebes, Moby, The Buzzcocks, Delerium, Steeleye Span, Vivaldi, R. Carlos Nakai, Berlioz, Tori Amos, The Four Tops, Rosanne Cash, The Doors, The Changelings, Vast, (Roth-era) Van Halen, Concrete Blonde, The Cruxshadows, The Rolling Stones (66-74), Melissa Etheridge, Metallica (pre-Load) and Janis Joplin.

Newer or more recent favorites include:

Thea Gilmore, S.J. Tucker, Susheela Ramen, Theresa Andersson, Kan'Nal, Gorjira, The Ditty Bops, Gnarls Barkley, Wendy Rule, Irfan, Regina Carter, Johnny Cash, Vas, Rasa, Azam Ali, Yungchen Lhamo, Shakira, Tan Dun, Joyclin Pook, Jack Johnson, Nightwish, Liz Wright, Reason D'Etre, Nickelback, Lucia Hwung, Patrick Park, State of Grace, Emerald Rose, James McMurtry, Bering Straits and Antigone Rising.

I'm always interested in hearing about cool new artists, too. :-)

A Christmas Story, American Beauty, Rize, …And God Created Woman, Being John Malkovitch, Do the Right Thing, Big Fish, Brotherhood of the Wolf, Casablanca, The Crow, Gothic, Kama Sutra, The Matrix, Modern Times, Kung Fu Panda, Iron Man, Monsoon Wedding, Prospero’s Books, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Rashomon, The Re-Animator, The Red Violin, Repo Man, Shakespeare in Love, Spirited Away and The Stunt Man, among many others.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of TV. In my experience, watching it too often makes you fat, sluggish and unsociable. That said, there are a few programs that I'll gladly get fat and sluggish to enjoy - usually on DVD, when I can watch as little or as much of them as I want, without the damned commercials! These would be...

Firefly, Angel, Buffy, Torchwood, Rome, Fairly Odd Parents, Veronica Mars, The L Word, Le Femme Nikita (seasons 1-3), Monty Python’s Flying Circus, Nip/Tuck, Sex and the City, Deadwood, The Sopranos, Whose Line is it Anyway?, and of course Xena

I also really enjoyed Allie McBeal, E.R. and The Practice back in the day, and it wouldn’t suck to catch them occasionally on DVD or something. And what is it with Law & Order or VH-1’s Behind the Music? I don’t go out of my way to watch them, but if these programs come on I’m hooked until the end of the episode…

    ..

Oh, man... normally I'd say "Be your own hero." But when measured against the achievements of folks whom I deeply respect that's a pretty pathetic statement. I don't often hold with putting people up on pedestals, but the following individuals have my props no matter where they stand:

    The Living:

Sherman Alexi, Bill Cosby, ani difranco, Barak Obama, Harlan Ellison, Julia Butterfly Hill, John McCain, Michael Moore, Leonard Peltier, Henry Rollins, John Shelby Spong, Starhawk, Desmond Tutu and Joss Whedon

    The Dead:

Lord George Byron, Rev. Martin Luthor King, jr., Eleanor of Aquitaine, Elizabeth I, Grandma Moses, Thomas Jefferson, Jeshua the Nazarine (aka Jesus of Nazareth), Akira Kurosawa, Timothy Leary, Jim Morrison, Rosa Parks, William Shakespeare, Sitting Bull, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, George Washington, Mary Wolstonecraft, and believe it or not, Wendy O. Williams

Ne Diyor

Hakkımda:

Who and what is a Satyrblade? To answer the first question, I'm a professional writer and teacher with almost 30 years of experience in theatre, music, dance, film, publishing, bodywork, mysticism, roleplaying, medievalism, and occasional fire-dancing. A dedicated romantic, I play on the sharp edge between mad poet and working pro. I love traveling, enjoy good company, geek out over movies and books, and with the right companions I can dance all night.

Restlessly creative and voraciously curious, I'm always into something. Chances are, if you're a roleplaying fan you probably have a book or two of mine on your shelf; even so, I'm more interested in writing urban fantasy and metaphysical nonfiction these days. For some reason, I seem more drawn to the fringes than attracted to the mainstream. It's not always a great living, but it beats dreaming about what "could have been."

These days, I'm happily sharing home, heart and complex relationship ideals with my beloved witchwoman Dami. Seattlites can often find us dancing like mad barefoot freaks at various clubs, drum circles and ecstatic improv events... with or without spinning fire poi. As for the "what" behind my Satyr-blade moniker - well, that's not something just anyone gets to find out... :P
