| About Savannah River Bluegrass |
Good Hard Driving Bluegrass in both traditional and contemporary styles. Based in the Aiken, South Carolina area, this band travels the southeast delivering their special blend of acoustic music that is guaranteed to get your feet a tapping and your hands a clapping.*
George Pritchard, has won over 130 trophies in his 66 year career playing in fiddle competitions, with over 100 of them being for first place. Brenda Lee got her start in radio and TV singing in George's band The Dusty Mtn. Boys on WRDW in Augusta, GA in 1954. George's favorite fiddle players are Benny Martin and Kenny Baker. *
Darryl Hudson grew up in Warrenville but now resides in Aiken, South Carolina. He has been with Savannah River Bluegrass since 1997 and is one of the founding members. Growing up, his musical influence was listening to country music and watching The Lewis Family on Sunday afternon on WJBF in Augusta, GA. Just out of high school he landed a job as a disc jockey at country music radio station WVAP and found a pile of old bluegrass albums in the back room that seldom got played. One listen to a Flatt & Scruggs album and he was hooked on bluegrass! *
Gary Oxley settled in Lexington, South Carolina after traveling around the world while in the Navy. Playing bluegrass music was always something he wanted to do, so he started taking fiddle lessons from Pappy Sherrill of the Hired Hands; realizing that was not his calling he switched to playing bass and singing tenor with various local groups. Upon joining The Carolina Bluegrass Band as a lead vocalist in 1987, he started playing mandolin, remaining with that group for over 18 years. *
Steve Smith, of Gilbert, South Carolina, got a Gene Autry guitar from Sears at age 4, and a 5 string banjo at 8. He was influenced by watching Little Roy Lewis on WJBF in Augusta Ga. and Snuffy Jenkins on WIS in Columbia, South Carolina. Steve was known as Little Snuffy in his early years after he and his dad Clinton Smith started playing a lot of shows with the Hired Hands and other groups in the area. A band was formed in the early 60's and in the early 70's were known as The Carolina Bluegrass Band. Steve was in Nashville during the early to mid 80's as a studio musician, writer, and producer. Steve joined The Savannah River Bluegrass Band in 2007. *
Ronnie Davis, originally from Jasper, Ga., and one of the founding members of Savannah River Bluegrass, joined the band in 1997. His first bluegrass band experience was in the hills of Georgia in the late 60's. In the early 70's Ronnie married and moved to Aiken, SC., where he has raised a family and called home for 35 years. During that time he has played a variety of music from country to rock-n-roll, to beach music, but finally turned full circle back to bluegrass, his first musical love. |
