About me:

Birthplace of Hip Hop

On August 11, 1973, in the first floor recreation room of 1520 Sedgwick Avenue, hip hop was born. Scholars, musicians, and the media widely recognize the General Sedgwick House, or Sedgwick Towers, the building located at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx borough of New York City, as the birthplace of hip hop, a uniquely American musical genre and culture that has become one of the most popular in the world.

Affordable Housing

The City of New York Housing and Community Development Administration constructed the building complex of 100 apartment units in 1969 as part of the state-financed Mitchell-Lama housing program. The building was constructed for low to middle income residents-- currently, two-thirds of the residents use Section 8 Vouchers and are identified as low or very low income, which means that a family of four earns less than 35,000 per year.

At Risk

However, the owner is planning to remove the building from the affordability program in February of 2008. We, the residents and our allies, have formed the 1520 Sedgwick Tenant Association and we are fighting to keep our building affordable. We realize that the Bronx, like the rest of New York, is rapidly gentrifying, and there is a ticking time period during which the owner is trying to remove the regulations from the building so that it will no longer be exclusively for low and middle income residents. This will open the floodgates of gentrification to 1520 Sedgwick, exposing the building to market forces that will forever change the character and feel of the house that built hip hop. We are doing everything we can to ensure that Sedgwick Towers stays affordable to working people like us who saw hip hop born in our community room.

Call to Action

CALL Mayor Bloomberg @ (212)NEW-YORK

*** Tell Mayor Bloomberg to reject the buy-out of 1520 Sedgwick because of its cultural significance and the need to preserve what is left of the city's affordable housing stock.

*** DEMAND that Mayor Bloomberg and HPD Comissioner Shaun Donovan put a MORATORIUM on ALL buyouts until they create tools to preserve Mitchell-Lama housing.

For more information on how to help preserve 1520 Sedgwick Ave. as affordable housing, contact:

Congrads,

The tenants of 1520, in partnership with the Urban Homesteading Assistance Board, have a plan to buy the building and keep it affordable forever.
