HELLO, MY NAME IS JOE. HERE IS MY STORY... On Christmas Eve four years ago, I went to the doctor for a really bad cough. I was immediately hospitalized and spent almost two weeks in the hospital where I was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma cancer. After enduring 6 months of chemotherapy and radiation, I went into remission. Last year, I learned my cancer had returned.
I spent most of last year hospitalized in isolation with other cancer patients undergoing intense chemotherapy treatment. I underwent my first stem cell transplant using my own bone marrow. Sadly, the transplant was unsuccessful and I recently started chemotherapy again. I will eventually become hospitalized until a bone marrow donor match is found for me.
A bone marrow donor must have an identical Human Leukocyte Antigen type (HLA type). My family HLA types do not match mine, meaning we are now searching for a non-related donor. A suitable donor will most likely have a similar ethnic background. I am Filipino, but there is a chance a match can be found with someone of Asian descent.
With the help of the non-profit organization DKMS, my friends and family are organizing various Marrow Registration Donor Drives. We are hoping that community involvement and support will result in finding my miracle match.
There is no mandatory fee to register and get tested, although donations are encouraged to cover DKMS's $65usd cost.
