Rebranding
With the lack of success the Free FM brand is producing, CBS appears to be slowly phasing out the homogenized Free FM brand. No new Free FM branded stations have been launched since the network was created, and new hot talk stations are branded in other ways now (for instance, WTZN in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania was launched as a hot talk station in April 2007 as "The Zone" instead of Free FM).
In addition, several of the original Free FM stations have de-emphasized or removed their "Free FM" branding. The first was WHFS in Baltimore, now known as Baltimore's FM Talk: A Free FM Station. WYSP in Philadelphia is now 94.1 WYSP, Talk that Rocks with the "Free FM" being used on a much smaller scale. WCKG in Chicago has resumed using Chicago's FM Talk Station. KLLI in Dallas has re-emphasized the Live 105.3 branding it had before Free FM. WJFK-FM is now known as Free FM 106.7 WJFK (note the return of the call letters; originally, call letters were ignored in Free FM brandings). In all of these cases, the stations still remain Free FM affiliates.
The first station to drop the Free FM format altogether was KIFR in San Francisco, which is now classic hits KFRC. Some shows displaced by the move will be moved to AM 1550 KYCY, the formerly all-podcast station, in the coming days. WFNY in New York became the second station to drop the format on May 24, 2007 reverting back to its pre-change WXRK callsign, Alt-rock format, and name - K-Rock.
There is some speculation that within the next month, all stations will drop Free FM based on poor ratings across the country coupled with backlash from the recent antics of talk radio hosts in various areas.[2]
***********************************UPDATE MAY 20*** In the past few days, we have worked hard to bring back Free FM. But 1069 Free FM in the Bay Area is indeed dead. I also learned that other Free FM markets may be affected as well. Wouldn't it be great to have the "Great American Boycott of CBS Radio?" but to get that started, would be way beyond my resources. The only way CBS Radio would be affected is to bring thousands and thousands of people to protest on their door and target their advertisements as well. Could this be accomplished here? We need thousands of signatures.
So in the mean time, the only thing we could do is to sign the petition and have our friends sign it as well. As a Die Hard Gray Area Fan, I will post flyer's on light poles, cars, public announcement boards, telegraph, anything to have the public go online and sign the online petition. I will need your help as well. In the next 25 days, we need to increase the online signatures to the thousands.
We will truly miss the 1069 Free FM Staff, from Elaine (our best traffic reporter) to The Gray Area show. We all agree that this is the most talented individuals we ever heard. Our voices needs to be heard and it is time to prove what we can do.

On Thursday May 18, 2007 at noon, the executive team of CBS Radio decided to pull the plug on KIFR 1069 Free FM into an oldies station. CBS Radio executives gave no warning into this matter and we lost one of the best radio stations in the Bay Area. So far there has been no word on why CBS Radio pulled the plug and refuse to give us any comment. I tried to call the station numerous times but with no results. The people of the Bay Area will come together and fight this ugly decision by writing to the advertisements to boycott CBS Radio or we will boycott those businesses. The more we spread the word, the more people will join to save the freedom of speech we truly enjoy.
With your help, I will soon have the complete list of sponsors for us to write letters to bring back Free FM or The Gray Area. Please bare with me within the next couple of days to develope this myspace page and bring media attention as well. In the meantime, help me spread the word. We can do this! Tell your freinds, post bulletins. Any ideas let me know.
