GeneralAnything that says Classic Vintage Las Vegas, the Strip, Sin City, and the Entertainment Capitol of the World!

Random things that come to mind are: martinis, nightclubs, lounges, friends, matchbooks, googie architecture, Mid Century modern architecture, classic cars, retro anything, the artist Shag, history, and dancing girls. Who doesn't like dancing girls?

MusicFrank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Peggy Lee, Tom Jones, Andy Williams, Ann Margret, Elvis, Nancy Sinatra, Tony Bennett

Basically anything from the Rat Pack era.

Oh and Liberace... He used to play next door at the Riviera! He was such a nice young man.

MoviesAll sorts of movies that were popular when I was born: 101 Dalmations, Jules and Jim, Breakfast at Tiffany's, Judgement at Nuremberg, Splendor in the Grass, the Absent Minded Professor, The Misfits, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Lover Come Back, and West Side Story.

Oh yes. 1961 was a very good year...

TelevisionThere was some classic TV on when I was born: The Andy Griffith Show, The Dick Van Dyke Show, Leave it to Beaver, The Twilight Zone... and others... sadly it was the last telecast year for I Love Lucy :(
BooksSome lovely books from 1961 include the Island of Blue Dolphins, James and the Giant Peach, Thunderball and Catch 22... Of course I also enjoy books on architecture and Las Vegas!

About me:
Dear Friends,

The La Concha Hotel has been saved. It was cut into pieces and moved off its original site to the Las Vegas Neon Museum boneyard. This profile will not be maintained anymore. (It actually was not maintained for the last 6 months or more.)

So to keep up to date on all future Las Vegas Preservation News and beyond and show your support for Modern Preservation on MySpace, Please add the Atomic Age Alliance to your friends list.

Save the La Concha Motel!!!

I am a historic concrete shell motel from the Golden Era of Las Vegas. I have been a part of the old Las Vegas Strip since 1961! And I'm was about to be torn down - but I was SAVED!

I was designed by African American architect Paul Revere Williams, Hollywood's "Architect to the Stars." He designed over 3,000 buildings, including the LAX International Airport Theme Building. A space age symbol of Los Angeles.

As Las Vegas continues to re-invent itself, I have seen famous casinos and famous landmarks like the Sands, Dunes and original Flamingo disappear, but remarkably, I have remained. I may be the most significant piece of Mid Century Modern architecture left in Las Vegas and have become the symbol of classic Las Vegas history.

BY THE WAY, my next door neighbor - The Famous PEPPERMILL may also be endangered...

I am old enough now to be a National Register landmark... on a cultural, architectural AND historic basis. The Las Vegas-based Neon Museum luckily saved part of my original neon sign by YESCO (Young Electric Sign Company) and their board members have a plan to save me by cutting up my shell-shaped structure and gingerly transporting it piece by piece and using it as the Visitor Center for the Neon Museum "boneyard" further up Las Vegas Boulevard. Here I would become a tremendous draw for visitors, architectural historians and students and the growing community.

We need to make sure the city does not give up its fight to save this RARE and very endangered icon. Monetary donations are desperately needed in order to receive the matching funds pledged by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitor Authority. And the city and cultural officials need to know that Las Vegans and visitors alike are behind saving this structure.

Um, could we get an update por favor? I know its down, but is it out? I had heard the building may be moved to an alternate location (downtown?). Ooo, it would've made a keen welcome center for the neon graveyard!!

So VERY happy to read the press release of December 12, 2006 that reports the La Concha will become the centerpiece of the Neon Museum complex. It is going to be used for a visitor's center, gallery and gift shop. What a perfect home for the 50s era "modern-style" building!
Bravo to all who contributed to its move!

My first trip to Vegas when I was 15 was at the La Concha, so it means alot to me. I hope with all the new construction that Vegas doesn't forget about it's roots!

This is so weird. I stubbled across your MySpace just weeks after moving from Las Vegas back home to the Seattle area.

The La Concha shell is kinda by the Wynn, right?

I remember passing by it, and thinking, '"Thats an interesting building. I wonder what was once there."

Now, I know :)

I'm a fan of old Vegas, I hate seeing things change there... I wish that all the old signs from past Las Vegas hotel/motel/casinos were still on the strip, like as a way to say "This was here"....

Anyway, Take Care & Best Of Luck To You!!!!!!

There's too many godamn high rise condos in this town already. If they tear you down, well, I curse those condos, and anyone who lives there.

Curses!

I can do that, you know, because I'm a witch. Or was that a bitch? I can't recall.

Best of luck.
