About me: We are a coalition dedicated to the preservation of GHI & HIP as non-profit healthcare providers. Nearly 4 million people in NY State subscribe to these plans including 500,000 NY City workers (including retirees). Since the 1940s these plans have provided quality low-cost options for working people and have served to shield New Yorkers from the worst effects of the national healthcare crisis.
Now, CEOs from the two companies have pressed NY State officials to approve their application to convert to for-profit status (privatize). Politicians in Albany and the leaders of municipal trade unions expect to reap major one-time cash payouts from the liquidation of company assets. Policy holders will be left defenseless facing a new mega-corporation intent on increasing profits through the denial of care and increased premium rates.
Who I'd like to meet: The Coalition Against Privatization welcomes all those who wish to build a democratic grassroots movement to stop the privatization. We are united by two beliefs:
1) We oppose the privatization of GHI & HIP
2) We believe that healthcare is a human right
We meet on Fridays at 6:30p in the A. J. Muste Institute at 339 Lafayette Street and we are planning a demonstration at the office of the Superintendent of Insurance at 4:30pm on Friday May 9th.
