Our friends and supporters on Myspace know about life on Pine Ridge Reservation---the poorest place in America--but far too many do not know. That is why this film is being created--to educate ALL of America. Such long standing conditions of poverty, malnutrition, disease, abuse in many forms, and dispair won't be solved if nobody knows about it....
We have an entire generation of young adults who have never heard about Pine Ridge Reservation -- or the other reservations -- of South Dakota. For those that do not know (far, far too many) there is a THIRD WORLD NATION in South Dakota and it's called Pine Ridge Reservation. The home of the Oglala Lakota.
This documentary will talk to the problems but also feature the HOPE for the future.
It's a future each and every one of us can be a part of by helping S.O.T.Y. and Crawford Multi-Media to finish this very important documentary. FUNDS ARE NEEDED NOW IN ORDER TO FINISH THIS PROJECT!! THE CREW PAID THEIR OWN WAY TO THE REZ IN MARCH and to finish this project, we need to pay for production and to reproduce it for the masses. Nothing has changed on Pine Ridge Reservation in over 150 YEARS, because all that has ever been done was to put a BAND-AID on things--not find real help or solutions. We want to end 2008 by thanking all our friends and supporters for your dedication, support, sponsorship, friendship, help, volunteerism, input and all you have done to make 2008 a very rewarding year for us at SOTY and for what we’ve been able to do to help our Native American brothers and sisters around the country and largely, on the Pine Ridge Reservation of South Dakota.
We have been blessed by friends and supporters who have gone to extra lengths to help, assist and volunteer. The knowledge that others believe so much in what you are doing that they go to amazing efforts to put together a benefit, is truly moving to us all.
In our first year, 2008, a number of the friends of SOTY attempted to put together benefit events or other fundraisers. While some were successful, others did not see success. This was NOT due to any lack of effort on the part of our supporters and volunteers—but more due to a very sad apathetic attitude of the American people as a whole towards our brothers and sisters in need. Yes, the economy has been very, very bad this past year, but the conditions of Pine Ridge Reservation have existed since 1868 and little has ever changed. This is due to a government that has never cared—and a general public that has become apathetic to the deplorable living conditions on Pine Ridge Reservation—the poorest place in America. It’s become too easy to look the other way. SOTY aims to change that—with the help of all of you!!
In 2008, SOTY worked to get the message out about poverty on our reservations affecting families and ultimately, our tribal youth. We participated in radio interviews, radio shows and fund raising benefits. We thank all of you who held or tried to hold fundraising benefits. For those whose efforts were not fruitful—it was NOT because your hearts were not in it. It is very hard to raise funds for a “nation” of people when 85% of your fellow citizen’s don’t even know that 45,000 Native American’s are living in third world conditions in their backyard.
Our government, media and schools have done their best to withhold the truth and the shame of the living conditions that we’ve allowed to exist on Pine Ridge Reservation and the other reservations of South Dakota. Many have even denied or lied about these conditions to cover it up. It’s too distasteful for some to acknowledge and if they did—could they sleep at night knowing they allowed it?
Pine Ridge is the largest reservation in South Dakota, so the need is greatest there. The living conditions on Pine Ridge Reservation is our national shame! As a nation of people who, as a whole, think themselves superior to any other country and their concern for others—above all others—we should be ashamed of ourselves!! Apathy is perhaps the single most criminal state of mind that a human being can have. Apathy allows death, disease, crime, hate and just about every other negative emotion known. It’s a killer!
By doing nothing—we allow this third world to exist in South Dakota. Apathy is contagious—and we as a nation have become truly apathetic to their plight. It’s never too late to change the tide, but it’s been growing since 1868—when is enough, enough??

In 2008, donations from the supporters and friends of SOTY helped us to:
• send garden seeds for a youth garden project to the Northern Cheyenne of Montana
• send truck loads of new and used clothing, blankets, coats and other items to Pine Ridge
• send boxes of clothing, coats, winter gear, diapers, formula, batteries, flashlights, candles and assorted other emergency needs to the Crazy Horse School in November after one of the worst blizzards in decades
• send clothing, winter gear, baby needs and other items to the Cangleska Shelter on Pine Ridge.
• send school and other new supplies to the Wolf Creek School
• send dozens of new caps, thermal gloves, knitted scarves and portable heat to the Big Foot Riders for the annual Wounded Knee memorial ride
• pay for several loads of firewood for elders and families on Pine Ridge
• find sponsors for nearly 100 children on Pine Ridge Reservation

Without all of our friends and supporters around the WORLD, Save Our Tribal Youth could not have accomplished any of this. This is not the effort of one person, but the efforts of hundreds around the globe working with SOTY and through SOTY. We at SOTY are truly blessed to call all of your friend, and to know that you care as much as we do about making life better for our tribal youth and their families on Pine Ridge Reservation and our other reservations in need.
We have one more HUGE request in ending 2008 – we still have about 25 children on our current list who need sponsors!! Please consider finding it in your heart to become involved in sponsoring a child on Pine Ridge Reservation. The program is free of charge. We only require that you commit to a holiday and birthday gift. If you are willing and able to do more than that throughout the year, that is fantastic but not required. Our current sponsors tell us how rewarding it is to know that they have brightened the life of a child who lives in abject poverty. It takes very little to give a child hope and a smile. Imagine being a child living in destitute poverty knowing a total stranger cares about them. Wouldn’t that give you the hope to dream and the courage to find a better future? A little bit of care and concern can change a life—especially for a teenager who feels there is no hope and no one cares….

Too many children on the reservations of North America struggle to live daily with hunger, malnutrition, lack of proper clothing, care or concern for their welfare. It is hard enough being a child in this environment where the majority of families live beneath the poverty level guidelines in this nations.Thousands of children live on reservations where infant mortality and teen death by suicide is at the highest national average.This is a frightening reality for thousands of Native American children growing up without hope for any kind of future. It is hard for those of us who do not live on a reservation to imagine what their lives must be like. For far too many families, there simply is not enough food to go around.Over 80% of families must depend on extremely limited government funds and food commodities to feed their children. The majority of households are lead by single mothers or grandmothers trying to raise more children than they can feed properly. In the winter and on birthdays and holidays too many children lack needed warm clothing such as winter coats and boots. Most don’t receive birthday presents because there simply is no money for such luxuries. What would it be like to live in an environment where having three meals a day is a luxury? Could you imagine that? For far too many – one meal a day is a luxury!

With this beauty of history in mind filled with heros such as Crazy Horse, Geronimo and many others, we at Save Our Tribal Youth have decided that the best way to honor our history as Native peoples is to bring the stories of our peoples to the tribal children on the reservations. HERE IS THE INFORMATION ON OUR SPONSORSHIP PROGRAM AND HOW YOU CAN PARTICIPATE - WHAT IS EXPECTED, HOW IT WILL WORK!

We ask that you send us an email at either:
saveourtribalyouth@gmail.com
or
Please let us know if you would like to sponsor a boy or girl, if there is an age preference and if there is a preference for the reservation you'd like to help. You must also include your "real" full name, phone number, email address and mailing address. We exchange this information with the parent/guardians of any child being sponsored. The parent/guardian's information will be provided to you by a SOTY representative once both parties agree to work together to benefit the welfare of the child.
We then leave it up to the sponsor to reach out to the parent/guardian and initiate contact via phone, email, snail mail or whatever method is indentified by the parent/guardian.
The two parties work to determine how the sponsor can best aid the child with needs as simple as a birthday gift or holiday gift(s), or some choose to become even more involved by helping with clothing, school supplies, or other needs as indentified by the child's family. It is up to the sponsor how invovled they wish to become in sending aid/help.
We encourage sponsors to send self addressed stamped envelopes to their sponsored child if they wish to receive letters (upon parent/guardian approval)as such items are luxuries for most families on reservations.
SOTY does NOT encourage sponsors to expect to meet their sponsored child in person or attempt to do so! Our mission is to aid the tribal youth, and to protect them and their families at the same time. You can still develop a very rewarding relationship/friendship and cultural exchange with your sponsored child through correspondence.
We hope you will decide to join our sponsorship program - it's free and very rewarding to all parties.
