About me:
New York City's Hotel Pennsylvania, a unique cultural landmark locally as well as worldwide, is under threat of demolition by Vornado Realty Trust, who hope to replace it with an office tower and a large "Times Square Junior" box of large advertisements.

New York Lost © is a documentary about the loss of what makes New York, New York. Developers are destroying it's unique stores, ethnic neighborhoods, and character while replacing it with chain stores that all look alike and glass condos. At risk is the exciting and diverse community that brings so many to New York, and what makes New York the world center of art, communications, finance and fashion. Is New York turning into a gated community and giant shopping mall? Is it fair to ask whether all of this change is a good thing? Will developers kill the goose that laid the golden egg? Is the spirit of neighborliness dead? I interviewed several New Yorkers from the founder of the Guardian Angels, Curtis Sliwa to an old time Fulton Fish Market docker worker. I think you will be fascinated with what they have to say. Visit www.myspace.com/newyorklost to view the film for a limited time until film festival premier.

The Hotel Pennsylvania is such an important piece of history. I remember being a little kid and bouncing around the yard in those Moon Shoes and singing the little ditty of the hotel. When I was much older, I got to stay at the hotel 2x for a conference. The rates were affordable, the space was perfect for our conference, and the staff was polite and understanding. I have such fond memories of the place. The conference happens 1x every 2 years and every time it happens, I feel like I'm living in a community of my peers for 3 days. After I leave, every single time, I grieve that loss. The Hotel Pennsylvania makes that possible. It made history in the past and fantastic memories in the present... may it continue to do so in the future.

In 1964, the original Penn Station - a vast, celebrated structure in pink granite - was demolished despite uproar and protests both locally and worldwide. That single event is now seen in architectural and historical circles as one of the classic blunders, something that should never have been allowed to happen. The City lost a part of itself that it could never get back.

The Hotel Pennsylvania, designed by the same firm as the original Penn Station, now faces the same crossroads. This is not a mistake we can afford to repeat. The Hotel Pennsylvania is a unique, irreplaceable piece of our history and heritage. Nothing like it can ever be made again.

Hotel Pennsylvania is not just a hotel. It is a place of memories, and some of those memories were made before I was born. Each time I hear the song “Pennsylvania 6-5000″ I think of the famous hotel in New York City. I have gone to more than one conference and admired the sheet music on display there. If you close your eyes you can almost hear history unfolding. I have made friends while visiting the hotel and will always cherish such happy memories.
