Much of American history has conveniently misplaced the tragedy of the Lakota … along with many other Native American tribes that have withstood immense adversity.
From the Massacre of Wounded Knee on December 29th in 1890 … where 500 U.S. Calvary troops commanded by James W. Forsyth opened fire (among their ammunition was four rapid fire Hotchkiss guns) on over 300 UNARMED Lakota men, women and children that were to be escorted to the Pine Ridge reservation … to the deceit of the mid 1900’s … better known as the Eugenics movement.
This period from the early 1900’s to as late as 1982, solidified the distrust of the U.S. Government by the Lakota. In its peak (the 1960’s and 1970’s) under the Nixon Administration, Lakota (and many other Native American women) were sterilized by their only health care providers on the reservation (the I.H.S.). These women came to the clinics for routine check ups and were (deliberately) misdiagnosed with ailments such as tonsillitis and scheduled for surgery. However, upon leaving the facilities after their procedures, Lakota women were devastated to find that they had actually been given hysterectomies under these false pretenses and were never again able to have children.
These are only two of many examples in which the United States Government has dealt genocidal attacks on the Lakota and we now humbly ask for your help to rebuild and gain the tools to re-establish our once great culture centered on generosity, humility and respect.
We are Sprit Rising, an organization focused on rebuilding/assisting Native families on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota ... many of whom have no electricity and are struggling just to survive.
