    WHO ARE WE?

    This year it was recommended to Newcastle City Council, through the Sustainability Review report, to sell and close down its only Youth Venue as a way of saving the city money.

    But when the young people of Newcastle found out about this they decided to fight this recommendation. So we created the 'Save The Loft' MySpace and Facebook network and we advocated to keep The Loft open.

    After lots of lobbying and campaigning to the Council and the community, Council decided on June 25 to keep The Loft open for at least another 2 years in order to create a "Youth Strategy" to promote and improve the services of the Youth Venue.

    So... we played a huge part in saving The Loft! I would like to thank every one who has been involved so far! But our fight is not over yet. Get ready for "Save The Loft 3" between now and 2011.

    ABOUT THE LOFT YOUTH VENUE

    ..WHERE IS THE LOFT?..

    It is pretty much in the mall, as in Hunter St Mall, right across from the Newcastle Perm.

    The address is: Level 1 / 7A Wolfe st Newcastle Mall

    ..WHAT IS THE LOFT? .. The Loft is something different to every one.

    For some people, it is the venue where all their favourite bands play.

    For others, it is a place they hang out in the holidays.

    For bands and artists, it is a place to practise their talents.

    For those without the net, The Lofts computers are their access to the Internet.

    What some people don't know is that The Loft is a Council funded space dedicated to people aged between 12 and 25. The Loft is home to many fun events and activities and it is a safe d&a free venue - so your parents won't be on your back.

CONSULTATION SESSIONS

The Loft Youth Arts and Cultural Centre in conjunction with Newcastle Voice are running a series of consultation sessions to gauge whether there is a need for the Loft to run youth arts activities in these areas, and whether there is the support and commitment from young people and the community to help make this happen.

We hope to see you at one of the following sessions:

* 21/10/09: Maryland Multipurpose Centre – 6 – 8pm

* 22/10/09: Elermore Vale Community Centre – 6 – 8pm

* 29/10/09: Multicultural Neighbourhood Centre – 4.30 – 6.30pm

    FINAL PLEA FROM SAVE THE LOFT
    The future of The Loft now seems unpredictable… depends on how the Councillors vote this Thursday, June 25. This is our final chance to make a difference.
    Come to the protest this Thursday June 25, gather from 5pm @ Civic Park. If you don’t wish to attend the protest, come to the Council meeting at 6.30pm (It was previously 4.45pm than 5.30pm meeting, but the time changed).
    AND
    Write these 3 Councillors heartfelt emails. Please don’t be rude or violent.

    i am so stoked on that poster, i hated it when i was finished because it took me so long to do without resting my brain. i'm going to try and actually get to this one, because its on a thursday. i think i have a couple red shirts. i'll make sure one is clean. it was cool meeting you on saturday, although somewhat briefly!

    IDEA:
    The Global battle of the bands are doing a heat at the loft.
    So i think NXFM is going to be down there at 4:45pm doing a live broadcast and giveaways
    so we should go and tell them about saving the loft.
