Mary is really happy about all the people who are supporting the No Dam effort Posted at 11:45 PM Nov 17, 2007 view more
About me: The Mary River is located in Queensland, Australia just north of Brisbane.
The river rises at Booroobin in the Sunshine Coast hinterland, west of Caloundra. From its source, the Mary River flows north through the towns of Kenilworth, Gympie, Tiaro and Maryborough before emptying into the Great Sandy Strait, a passage of water between the mainland and Fraser Island, near the town of River Heads, 17 km south of Hervey Bay. The river is home to the endangered Mary River Turtle (Elusor macrurus), the Queensland Lungfish (Neoceratodus forsteri) and the endangered Mary River Cod (Maccullochella peelii mariensis).
In April of 2006, Peter Beattie, the Premier of Queensland announced that the Mary would be dammed at Traveston Crossing which is about 20 kilometres south of Gympie. The mega dam would flood over 9000 hectares of prime agricultural land and inundate or fundamentally alter the communities of Kandanga, Imbil and Carters Ridge. Over 900 families will be forced from their homes if this proposal goes ahead.
The dam is an act of environmental vandalism which will destroy the eco system of the river valley and threaten the downstream eco systems including the World Heritage listed Great Sandy Straits and protected Ramsaar Wetlands.

Who I'd like to meet: environmentalists, nature lovers, people who believe it is important to protect our planet, conservationists, political activitists, people involved in fighting irresponsible government actions, people who can help spread the word to save the Mary River
Mary, beware of that last comment! It is NOT God, but the devil himself! Don't open that link! Delete that comment ASAP. Even God gets hacked sometimes!
What up? I found this website and thought i'd tell everyone, it shows you if anyone at school likes you... I dont know how it works but its really cool, its revealed a few people who have had crushes on me FOREVER, i called the person up and it was TRUE!! You gotta try it!
Mary, You now have some new people involved in the political process, so I hope they will step forward to oppose the environmental vandalism, proposed in the Mary Valley. There must be someone, who will oppose the walking oil slicks, who are behind this Dam on the Mary.
Just letting you all know to read The Sunday Mail tomorrow and also The Courier Mail on Monday, there will apparently be an article in each on the Mary River Dam and on how they intend to offset the Forest areas that will be lost due to inundation. I'd also like to urge you all to write letters to the editors of any papers that you read, even if they aren't published they will show the editor that there is a real community interest in the matter and prompt more media coverage of the issue. Anyone out there who is handy with a camera should also head up to their favourite part of the Mary river and snap some of the beautiful animals and scenery, that's what I did and now my pic is going to be used by the Coruier Mail :) It seems that small efforts like this can make a big difference!
Mary, Go check out Sara Storer's new song/video "Land Cries Out" at myspace.com/sarastorermusic It is a song, that fits your fight, in the Mary Valley! All about families and their land.
