     Hi All...

Ludwig O'Neill here... just to let you know that a new campaign to save the bars from demolition has begun... Others are running it and I have offered whatever help they require.

One of the things i have done is to reopen THIS page.

Go and check out Save The Rotterdam on Facebook - i am sure it will be easier for you all to update there.

In the meantime I will make this page available to everyone AND there are loads of pics here etc... most of them are my own copyright so ask before you use :) I can also be found on Facebook - Ludwig O'Neill. Easy!

Another chapter... hopefully not the last!

    Cheers

    I just saw the news...

I spit in what I hope is Art Monney's direction.

I hope his attempt at "progress" ends in dismal failure.

It's pretty amazing, so many people put so much effort into helping preserve The Rotterdam as a testament to both Belfast's history and it's varied culture...made progress, secured victories...then to see it turn to this, all because of a lack of shared vision.

Hopefully realization will set in before it's too late.

This is Jenny performing with fire poi in the beer garden of The now defunct... soon to be demolished (if we all don't get our collective finger out) Rotterdam Bar, Belfast, Ireland... LONG LIVE THE ROTTERDAM BAR! ..

PEOPLE WHO CAN COMPROMISE AND DEVELOP SENSITIVELY AND SYMPATHETICALLY - I BELIEVE THOSE PEOPLE DO EXIST - AND WHAT A FINE PRECEDENCE THEY WOULD SET! The ORIGNAL Rotterdam Bar (refurbished so that it was fully functioning on all floors) Would prove such an attraction to potential tourist trade and for those who take up residence in the 'adjacent' high rise luxury apartment scheme. A little'GENUINE' piece of Belfast's Sailortown... dwarfed, yet proud in it's own stature and deep local tradition.

About me:

NEWS!!!!

I (Ludwig) have ceased to be the booking agent for the Rotterdam Bar. For me, it is time to move on. My work there is finished - I have songs to write, gigs to do, a CD to release and a tour to organise... never mind a holiday for my beleaguered family!

For now, this page will stand as a tribute to the hard work and effort that was poured into the campaign to save The Rotterdam by so many people - and to all those who supported from the depths of cyberspace, around the world and beyond!!

Thank you so much for all the wonderful comments and support

Here's a nice quote...

"This pair of 19th Century bars, in the area known as Sailortown are tangible reminders of the city's maritime heritage and serve as a vital draw for visitors... "...the two pubs were the last of their kind and should be preserved for future generations"

We've dispensed with petitions.. (we all know the score now - no need for another head count)

Here is an excerpt from the planning application for the site

Source: http://www.planningni.gov.uk/Devel_Control/council_schedules/newtownabbey/Newtonabbey_A110507.pdf “1024F 54 Pilot Street and No’s 19-22 Princes Dock Street, Belfast Proposed demolition of existing 2no public houses and construction of 59noprivate apartments above 2no replacement public houses with basement carpark. _________________________________________________________

I have recently veiwed these plans and will be doing so in the very near future (an in depth look)... and... while there are still plans pending... they have been objected to on so many fronts by a number of authorities - and notwithstanding the fact that the currently submitted plans represent the wishes of a different owner, (when there was 'investment potential' in a development of the site...) The global economic recession and the general downturn in the housing market has ensured that this 'development potential' no longer exists...

SO EVEN IF THE PLANNING APPLICATION DOES GET THE GO AHEAD - IF ALL THE CRITERIA SET DOWN IN 'ALL' OF THE OBJECTIONS IS INDEED MET - THEN THE MARKET STILL SAYS... 'NO CHANCE OF MAKING ANY MONEY!

So who in their right mind would see fit to knocking down the Rotterdam Bar if it wasn't worth the money? Or if it was worth more than money to keep it open and renovate!

I still believe we need to persuade the right people to realise how important this bar would be as a tourist landmark with all of its maritime history and the very fact that, musically it is the Belfast equivalent of Liverpools Cavern Club... an icon of the city's contemporary music scene for some 27 years.

As i write this... houses (social/mixed housing) are being built in Sailortown/Pilot Street... Yes there are apartments going up (at a notably slower rate than the houses - So that suggests something in itself) Sailortown is going to have a 'community' again - for the first time in over 30 years!!
