If you haven’t heard yet Hampshire County Council are threatening to shut down the West End Centre, Aldershot – permanently!
Not only does the Westie give people, especially teenagers, a place to go, it has also accommodated the creation of one of the most influential music scenes in the country. Hundred Reasons, Reuben, Vex Red and countless others began their careers there and
massive international touring bands such as Biffy Clyro, A, The Cooper Temple Clause, Bouncing Souls etc. frequently pass through the Westie doors, with the common opinion that it is one of their favourite places to play live in the UK.
Local bands of all ages have also thrived from the scene created at the Westie. A number of venues have age restrictions to even play there live, but the Westie team have supported all ages in their musical pursuits.
The Westie also admits minors, unlike many music venues/clubs plus they have always offered incredible value for money in terms of admission and refreshment prices.
All of you that have attended amazing courses like Rocked Out - these wouldn’t have been established had the Westie not have been willing to accommodate and help develop them.
Not only does the Westie support the local music scene it also supports comedy and theatre often showcasing Hampshire’s talent. If you have ever wanted to take a pottery/art or jewellery making class, you’ve guessed it – the Westie has provided it. Overall you’d think that Hampshire County Council would want to deprive us all of the opportunity to become rounded individuals by closing this facility.
Where else is there to go other than the Westie in Aldershot, nay, Hampshire and the surrounding areas? (Unless you consider roaming the streets/park on a Friday evening a good night out – not something you would think Hampshire County Council would be supporting or condoning!)
And how many of you have enjoyed evenings hanging out at the Westie? I’m sure you can all remember a time where you danced your socks off to your favourite rock/ska/punk/emo/whatever band – come on we’ve all been there!
It would be a massive shame to let the council close it. Support the Westie and email your comments to the Aldershot Mail at newsdesk@aldershot.co.uk, who are currently organising a petition and other means of support. Get involved!
Even better direct your own email to info.centres@hants.gov.uk (Hampshire County Council) and andrew.colver@rushmoor.gov.uk (Rushmoor Borough Council) and let them know how you feel about the intended closure.
Make sure you come down to the Westival on the 20th and 21st July where there are some amazing bands playing. Your support at this event is crucial!
Also you can add the Brunette Mindcontrol song ‘Saving the Westie’ to your profile (found at www.myspace.com/brunettemindcontrol). Add this page as your top friend to show your support and help spread the word before it’s too late - “Damn the Man, Save the Westie”
It’s not just a venue, a centre or a building – it’s an invaluable outlet for creativity!!!!!!!!
And to end, here is a quote from Hampshire County Council’s art pages:
“Arts in Hampshire? The arts are thriving in Hampshire, with a rich variety of theatres, galleries, arts centres, concert halls and more unusual venues providing high quality professional arts performances, exhibitions, workshops, classes and talks across the county. Hampshire is home to a strong community of musicians, actors, film makers, writers, artists and crafts people and boasts a large collection of community based arts organisations and organisations working to improve their communities through the arts.” http://www.hants.gov.uk/arts/arts.html
… And how is closing one of the key venues in Hampshire in keeping with this philosophy?
