Musical's Blurbs |
About me:
Hello, I have an irksome problem. I have discovered that my opinions about Norwich City Council were incorrect! I feared at first that they were just prejudiced towards the alternative scene but now I realise that it is far more serious than that, they actually hate music! The only music they tolerate on a regular basis is the claptrap churned out of the charts and played in clubs because they can make money out of it by charging extortionate rates on the enormous venues supplying this stuff.
As I already said, I feared at first that is was just the alternative scene they were discriminating against but the problem goes far deeper than that. They have actually started slapping sound limiters on all available wall space within music venues. This includes believe it or not, St. Andrew's Hall (home of Norwich's much loved beer festival for those who don't know it).
St. Andrew's Hall has a very diverse selection of music played there. In fact, I played there in an extra curricular government funded orchestra several times and loved it as did all the other members of the orchestra and their parents. However, due to the council giving planning permission to people to build flats on every centimeter of available space in the city center new residents are popping up all over the place. Now in my opinion, this should not be a problem. You're moving into the city center you're going to expect some noise right? Wrong. These new residents are cropping up all over the place and complaing about the noise coming from long established music venues that were there years before the posh houses they're living in were even designed! One wouldn't move next to Gatwick airport and complain that you could hear the odd aeroplane, and even if you did it wouldn't get you anywhere as the airport was long in existence before you moved there. However, the same logic does not seem to apply with our council who seem to think that it is fair to slap noise limiters in everywhere and demand vast amounts of costly soundproofing is done to limit any noise. I find it odd that all these small venues that mostly close at 11pm and rarely have any trouble that requires police attendance are being targeted when the main culprits are being left well alone. I don't know if anyone else has had the misfortune of walking down Prince of Wales Road on a weekend night but I have and I can sefely say I have never enjoyed it. I find it astonishing that our diligent council have not slapped noise limiters, anti-vomiting devices and foam hands on some of the people who seem to frequent that part of town. It has the worst reputation in East Anglia and has to be constantly policed at the weekend because of violence and yet the people who are coming off worse are the people who generally behave themselves. The alternative music scene was thriving this time last year and Norwich should be proud that so many youngsters want to play in bands and are working to achieve something. They should be supporting it, not making it harder. When I was a teenager I used to play in Orchestras as I mentioned already, the council slashed the music budget so drastically the organisers had to start charging termly fees which made it impossible for some children to attend because their parents couldn't afford it. It's a disgrace that the government encourages children to take up an instrument and have free tuition but then allows local councils to undo the good work by making it impossible to play their chosen instruments anywhere! As a parent myself I would love to see my son in a band or orchestra or whatever he choses. The way it stands at the moment there won't be anywhere for bands etc to play next week, let alone 10 years time. By then we'll probably all be forced to sit at home watching TV because if you don't like mainstream music or forms of socialising there won't be anything else provided for you. Norwich is supposedly a city of culture and this country is supposedly a democracy, if you really look for it, you don't see much evidence of either. Bloody Hell!
Let's march at the Lord Mayor's Procession so they can't pretend people that give a shit don't exist. Saturday 15th July 6.45 procession starts. Any ideas for this demonstration would be greatly appreciated. Sorry about the essay!

Who I'd like to meet:
Like minded people who might be interested in joining a protest march at the Lord Mayor's Procession to get our point across. People who can think of clever campaign slogans. The Lord Mayor. Geniuses.
