Savvy's sound was very uniqe at the time. One music writer referred to it as Riff-Rock. It was riffy, alright. Another writer once described Savvy's sound as "Boston meets The Cars." The band's live performances were driven by the non-stop energy of guitarist / writer / singer Ricky Lynn Gregg. All six band members sang, resulting in very full harmonies, a luxury few bands had at the time.
(NOTE: Steve Jones and Rick Miller from Savvy have a new band called The Jones-Miller Band. Click on the Jones-Miller Band icon in the Friends List or go to www.myspace.com/jonesmillerband for more info.)
Savvy was the house band at the legendary Ft. Worth rock landmark of the 1980's - Savvy's Nightclub. In June, 1980, Savvy won a battle of the bands with the other top bands in N. Texas. Their prize, an opening slot at the '80 Texxas World Music Festival (Texxas Jam) was denied at the last minute. The lineup for the show consisted of the very hottest rock bands of the day; The Eagles, Foreigner, Cheap Trick, April Wine, Sammy Hagar, and Christopher Cross -- all in their prime. Eagles manager, Irving Azoff, pulled the plug on Savvy's appearance the morning of the show. In later interviews, the reason he gave was that "the show was already too long as it was." It could have been the opportunity of a lifetime for Savvy, but instead they became known as the band that got ripped off at the Texxas Jam. Savvy, and the club Savvy's became legendary. When Savvy would go on the road, another local band who was just starting out would frequently play there. That band was called Pantera. A lot of musical history too place at Savvy's.
