Sounds Like
A Saw and a Cello (or. . .Chronic Roots mixed with Maple Grove & Mad Apathy with a twist of Independent Existence)
With influences ranging from Lamb of God and Opeth to Amos Lee and David Gray, this Greater-Phoenix-Area 3-piece band has managed to create a sound unique in and of itself. A tremendously beautiful blend of acoustic and electric guitars, vocal harmonies, and smooth beats, it is apparent where SAWCELLO gets their name the moment the serenity of the music is transformed to edgy distortion, ear-shattering screams, and thrashing drums, bringing to mind immediately the contrasting difference between an elegent cello and a grinding buzz saw.
Formed in late 2006 by Scott Kennedy (vocals) and Tim Scritchfield (guitar & vocals) as a two-piece acoustic setup reminiscent of Tenacious D and Simon & Garfunkle, the duo soon realized they were creating a sound that could not be fully embraced without plugging in and getting a little louder, thus also requiring some percussion. Enter Ben Ehrhart (drums).
Scott met Tim at a warehouse in Phoenix where they were both employed in mid-2006, two years after Scott had moved to Arizona from Elkton, Maryland, where he had performed with his previous band, Maple Grove. Here, the two became aware that they shared a passion for music and a love of many of the same bands, including Pink Floyd (specifically the work of David Gilmour), The Beatles (specifically the work of George Harrison), Tool, and just about every band that has ever been labeled "grunge" (specifically the pure, raw harmonies of bands such as Temple of the Dog and Alice in Chains) to name but a few. Once they each realized the other's musical potential, it was a downhill slide into a fast-forming musical bond neither had experienced previously.
Raised in Arizona's Flaggstaff and Show Low backwoods on healthy doses of rock and folk music, Tim had previously played with the band Chronic Roots before moving to Phoenix, but was not currently involved in any projects. It wasn't long before Tim introduced Scott to his friend Ben, who was at this time drumming for a little group called Independent Existence. Hailing originally from Lumberton, Texas, Ben was stolen away from Independent Existence and quickly filled a gaping hole in the music of Sawcello, sustaining their new sound like glue.
Having frequented such establishments as Last Exit, The Ruby Room, Hollywood Alley, Crabby Don's, Donna Jean's Libations, The Stray Cat, The Firehouse, Joe's Grotto, Chaser's, and The Joint (Flaggstaff), among others, Sawcello sees Kennedy, Scritchfield, and Ehrhart rising from the ashes of their previous projects and making waves in the city whose name is reknowned for the same.---------------------------------------------------------------------
