Original • Dynamic • Creative • Diverse • Captivating

These are easy words to throw around. Sometimes, however, they just plain fit. These are the things you hear when audiences, critics and other musicians are describing Sawmill Road. It is an amazing collection of seasoned players who perform at a level that always brings a powerful mixture of bluegrass styles to any stage.

Steve Spurgin ::
A native son of the Lone Star State, Steve’s professional career began in 1965 and has covered the gamut. His rock-solid bass provides the foundation every band requires. Steve is a former Nashville staff-writer for Gene Watson and Reba McEntire and has received a BMI writers’ award, three “IBMA Band of the Year” awards, and is a “New Folk” winner at the Kerrville Folk Festival. He has performed and toured with “Wild Oats”, “Cheyenne”, Byron Berline’s “Sundance”, Mason Williams, Freddy Fender, “The Limeliters”, “Bluegrass Etc.” and the bluegrass super-group “California”.

Dick Brown ::
Perhaps best known as the banjo player and a founding member of “Lost Highway”, Dick has traveled the world performing, teaching and sharing his love of banjo music. Originally from New Mexico, he is a two-time winner of the Four Corners State Banjo Championship, and his playing style centers on taste, tone and power. It always seems to be just what the song needs. Dick has performed and recorded with “Lost Highway”, “Long, Lonesome Road”, Lynn Morris, “Copper River”, “Traditional Bluegrass”, and others.

Doug Bartlett ::
Originally from Syracuse, New York, Doug now calls Arizona his home. A multi-instrumentalist (five!), singer, songwriter and top-tier professional, his dynamic fiddle playing always adds the perfect element. Like the other members of Sawmill Road, Doug brings a wealth of experience with him. He is a former member of Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver, The James King Band, The Del McCoury Band, The Lonesome River Band, as well as other major national groups. & Quicksilver”.

Charlie Edsall ::
Hailing from the Fort Wayne, Indiana area, Charlie began playing guitar at the age of nine. Although he also plays bass and banjo, his accomplished ability on the acoustic guitar proves he is a consummate pro. As a writer, his self-penned “Cold Virginia Rain” is the 1 cut on “Bluegrass Prime Cuts, Vol. 69” on Pinecastle Records, and has been recorded by Josh Williams and performed by “Rhonda Vincent & The Rage” on The Grand Old Opry. Charlie has performed and toured with “Feather River”, “High Strung”, and “Ron Spears & Within Tradition”.

Mark Miracle ::
A product of the state of Arizona, Mark is a multi-instrumentalist handles the mandolin and tenor vocal duties with clear style. He is a 30 year verteran with a fresh approach to bluegrass that never abandons its roots and is always clean, tasteful and driving. Mark has won numerous mandolin contests, including Payson, Blythe and Wickenburg, and is a former of “Shady Creek”, “Mountain Therapy”, and “Clear Blue” — a previous winner of the Telluride Bluegrass Festival band contest.

After you've finished here, you may like to hear this folk-carol on myspace...
Poem 230 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse
(see my blog for details):
CHRISTMAS SUNG SIMPLY

As gospellers have said,
Beneath signalling skies,
On land dusty to tread,
A trough in a stable
Was the strawy first-bed
Of a divine baby -
The forgiving Godhead.

A season for new hope -
There then and here now;
The yuletide of goodwill -
There then and here now.

In respect of this chance,
Beneath bright or dark skies,
Faith's the star that we glance
Attending Christ's churches
And trying to enhance,
With singing and ritual,
Our God-loving stance.

A...

My pappa passed away last Friday night in Bakersfield at our home.  My pappa, Terry Allen Brenneise loved your music. We saw you play at my very first Blue Grass Festival down south last summer at Summergrass.  My pappa was only 51 years old.

TEES TO TYNE: FIRST IMPRESSIONS - SUMMER 2001

Where traditions are not so rare;
    Sea, country and works scent the air;
A multitude of monuments,
    Planted tubs and patterned pavements.

The longish pedestrian malls;
    The remnants of defensive walls;
Historic buildings are a gauge
    Of the respect for heritage.

Wheat, rape and pines in the fields;
    Estuaries guarded by shields;
Long sandy beaches and wide scenes;
    Romantic-ruin go-betweens.

Rivers in parts licked by trees,
    Or fringed by boat clubs, wharfs, gantries,
And crossed by practical delights -
    Varied spans, forming pleasing sights.

Fine churches headed at Durham;
    Football kits ad infinitum;
Kept castles - one for study;
    Masonry behind masonry.

And, with moulding-works out that way,
It’s somewhere for a longer stay..?

WALKABOUT WITH MY PEN

Once drove an old sedan, up north,
From a place in Sydney to Cairns;
Then to Kuranda I went forth,
By train, to look without set plans.

I browsed through the trendy market,
With fresh fruits of tropical kind;
Walked to the creek through lush thicket -
Nature’s hand giving peace of mind.

I dined in a scenic cafe;
Then, outside, as I wrote for yen,
Some passing Kooris called-out: “Hey,
You go walkabout with your pen.”

Request or question, I don’t know -
Assured voices, elderly men.
That’s now several years ago,
And I’ve seen the world - with my pen.
