Influences
The first 2 influences in my youth were Dave Sanborn and Eric Dolphy. Dolphy I still listen too. Over the years performers from the jazz and classical world have been influential. Gerves Du Pire ( French classical clarinetist with an beautiful delicate tone) John Coltrane, Miles Davis, John Mclaughlin Stanley Clarke, George Duke, these guys were an influence on how bands/ensembles should perform.
I have learnt a lot from the Japanese bamboo flute (Zen Flute) on micro tonal, multiphonic, quarter tonal playing etc, these tecniques are regularly used on my recordings.
Sounds Like
Some of my clarinet playing is like nothing you've heard before (examples soon). Stuff like Summertime on contra alto clarinet, 6 minute solo. Improvised quartets just has not been done before. So look out.
Mark Buckingham is a clarinet and saxophone (Signature Custom Series Saxopohnes) player with over thirty years experience. Does nothing but practice all day and can’t get gigs because the industry is fuccced. He has performed in a variety of musical settings; chamber ensembles, orchestras, jazz groups through to pop and reggae bands. At present Mark performs and records with two ensembles: Iota; a funk/jazz/modal improvisation group, that also performs jazz standards and funk classics for functions etc; and Potent; a six piece drum and bass band.
Mark’s discography comprises nine CDs, these include: Solo Classical Clarinet; Improvised Quartets (where Mark play’s four different sized clarinets); Solo, which contains jazz standards and improvisations.
For the last ten years Mark has concentrated on the "alternative sound world" of the clarinet family, developing the techniques needed to perform multiphonics, microtones, quartertones, aleatory(chance) etc, within improvisations. Many CD’s demonstrate these experimental techniques.
Mark’s published works include arrangements of; Ravel’s String Quartet arranged for Clarinet Quartet and Saxophone Quartet; Schoenberg’s ..Transfigured Night. arranged for Clarinet Choir; Paganini Caprices for Solo Violin arranged for Clarinet and Saxophone.
Jammin’ The Blues was created from Mark’s experience as a teacher and player over the last twenty-five years. Very few teachers address creative music-making as part of their instrumental lessons, mainly through lack of confidence. The series was created not only for students of all levels to develop their creative skills but also for the teaching community, so that they may learn from the series, and then feel able to include improvisation in their lessons. Mark has lectured on improvisation, and "how to teach improvisation".
Mark will be talking to teachers about improvisation and Jammin’ The Blues as part of a programme organized by the Trevor J James & Co, makers of the Signature Custom Series of saxophones on which Mark performs and records.
