REGGAE - Bob Marley, Steel Pulse Band
WORLD MUSIC - King Sunny Ade, various Turkish, Ethiopian, and all over the globe
I like old school country like HANK WILLIAMS and PATSY CLINE.
BASICALLY, I'm into everything except THE SAME OLD THREE CHORD, BASHING, EAR-SPLITTING ROCK & ROLL with some WHINY, EGO-CENTRIC, NARCISSISTIC SINGER screaming IMMATURE, INSIPID ADOLESCENT LOVE-FANTASY RHYMES over a BAND WHO THINKS THEY'RE TOO COOL TO LEARN SOME DAMN MUSIC THEORY!
Gee, that felt good. If I've offended you, great! Learn something about music, then come back and let's talk.
Movies
Network, Magnolia, It's a wonderful life, City of Angels, Matrix 1, (damn the sequel), Dead Poet's Society...
Mr. Smith goes to Washington, The Marathon Man, Three Days of the Condor, L.A. Confidential, The Shawshank Redemption, Citizen Kane, Under the Tuscan Sun, The Constant Gardner, The Godfather.... I like good foreign films. A while back saw a quirky one I liked called 'Lila Says'.
NON-FICTION: Wayne Dyer's 'The Power of Intention' - the best presentation on spirituality I've seen in a long time. 'What the Bleep' was okay, too.
DOCUMENTARIES: Kids with Cameras, Robert Kennedy, M.L.K., Rod Serling, Sisters of Selma...
Television
Don't have cable and network is CRAP, so I don't spend much time watching TV. You can't and really have a LIFE, you know what I mean?
Thought I liked 'Friends' - nah, just a phase. Thought I liked 'That 70's Show'. Funny, but adolescent. Then I discovered 'Coupling.' The Brits write intelligent, funny dialogue that doesn't assume we're idiots! Nice. I dig Family Guy - irreverence at its best. Sex in the City was a good show. Bit I REALLY dig good vintage stuff - Rod Serling's stuff, etc.
Books
My musical career doesn't afford me much time to read fiction, unfortunately. So for now, I'm concentrating on spirituality, philosophy, art, music, etc. My favorite short story of all time is 'The Bet' by Anton Checkov. Check it out!
Heroes
Jesus, Ghandi, Martin Luther King Jr, John F. Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, Deitrich Bonhoffer, crazy fellow Scorpio Ted Turner for buying land just to PREVENT people from developing it, donating a billion dollars to the peace effort and cursing in public.
MY HERO: Any person not so overcome by their own ego to help a fellow man. For instance, Julianne Moore is talented, beautiful and compassionate. Angelina Jolie and Ashley Judd do their thing, too. Grrrrr!
About me: Dave Bass - vocals, sax, flute, clarinet, guitar, drums

I sing, play 4 saxes, (soprano, alto, tenor, bari), flute, clarinet, guitar, drums and piano. I compose and arrange, and write unusual arrangements of both well-known and obscure 'cover' material.
I like to blend traditional and modern ideas, and I operate in many genres, though by backround is steeped in traditional jazz - 'bebop' as they called it - owing to my dad who was a professional guitarist and composer in New York City in the 50's and 60's.
I have my hands in a lot of different projects; jazz, Brazilian, blues, R&B, funk, pop, and even Turkish bellydancing music! I am originally from Queens, New York, got my career going in Atlanta, and am relocating to the Las Vegas / Los Angeles area in March of '08. I have been working on a wonderful debut CD for over 4 years, which will soon be finished, (finally!) and available for purchase.
My first love was non-musical writing, (poetry, short stories, essays, journalism). I was published at 9 years old, (poetry), and went on to win numerous awards in school for my writing. After college, I did a short stint as a freelance journalist for a big local newspaper.
At the same time, music was always a part of my life, like breathing, from the time I was a toddler. I landed my first professional gig at 15, and went on to gain experience in many settings; big bands, small jazz and blues combos, variety groups, and even a country band, (playing alongside my pops). (Shhh! Don't tell anyone.)
While I love writing and music, somewhere along the way music took over as my primary vocation. While I was making the transition to being a full-time musician, I got heavily involved in restaurant management and consulting and climbed the ladder very quickly. The experience in management was fantastic, but it was just a layover on the way to my real passions.
I recently had the priviledge of playing songwriter Johnny Mercer in a new musical about his life and music called "Love, Johnny." It is planning a U.S. tour soon - see the website I built for it - www.lovejohnny.com. I love the arts - film, painting, sculpture, dance, writing, music, and acting.
Personally speaking, my life has been so unusual it could be a movie script. I'm not kidding when I say this. I won't get into the details, but just say I have been blessed to experience a number of agonies and ecstacies most people don't experience in this life, starting at a very young age. The bottom line? God is great. The very act of being ALIVE is 100% gift. Don't forget it. Every morning when you wake up - first thing - thank God for it.
I have learned the hard way that the key to success in anything is Divine Surrender. Not surrender in the world's sense of 'Give up and lose.' But Divine Surrender as in 'Give up and win!'
You see, we humans THINK we know shit. We don't know shit. God knows shit. When we surrender to the Divine, everything can flow through us - life, creativity, relationships. Ego runs counter to this in every way. Ego is the ILLUSION of control. There is no control. There is only surrender or fighting surrender. This is just my opinion of course, and you may think I'm full of shit. Then again... you may be one of those people who thinks they KNOW shit! : )
PHOTOGRAPHY: A couple of years ago I got into photography. I love shooting people, especially people. I think the human figure is the greatest work of art, no contest. I love the natural, unguarded moments on camera. I love shooting nature too. I am looking for my photographic 'muse' - someone who wants to collaborate to produce some lasting images of beauty. I like the works of Berko, Demarchalier, Testino, Joyce Tenneson, etc.
HOBBIES: Anything in motion - walking, biking, swimming, yoga, rollerblading, basketball, frisbee, football, volleyball, working out. Soon I plan to do mountain climbing, skiing, surfing, hang-gliding. I'm game for anything once, except perhaps bungee jumping.
I am an intense & passionate person - a true triple Scorpio. I love to connect with people on the deeper levels - in good conversation, making music, art, etc. 'Integrity' is my favorite word in the English language.
And I'm a bit of a health-nut. I don't smoke, rarely drink and don't use drugs. I just don't feel the need for them. I get high on Life!
Come see a show -
Peace,
Dave
