Saxton's Cornet Band is a musical ensemble that re-creates the sound and appearance of brass bands popular in the era of the American Civil War. The band's members are professional musicians dedicated to musical excellence and historical accuracy. The band uses instruments and mouthpieces original to the Civil War era and plays music from Civil War band books and other historic sources. The band's performances and costuming are accurate and follow documented 19th century practice. Listening to Saxton's Cornet Band is as close as one can come to hearing the brass band music enjoyed by soldiers during the mid-19th century.
The band is named for the original Saxton's Cornet Band of Lexington, Kentucky. Henry Saxton and his son, Henry Saxton, Jr. formed the group during the Civil War and kept the musical ensemble running into the early 20th Century. The modern band is celebrating its 18th anniversary in 2007. Started by two avid brass band and Civil War enthusiasts in 1989, the band has performed in concert halls, reenactments and ceremonies as well as other special events from New York to Florida and from Colorado to South Carolina. The band completed its first international tour when it performed in Taiwan in 2003. Motion picture credits include:
