Resident Musician for 15 years at the Jefferson Hotel and an alumni of Berklee School of Music, Skip Gailes is a masterful improviser on Saxophone, Piano, and Flute. He has performed as band leader in virtually every regional jazz club,as well as extensive performances in Washington D.C. , New York, and Boston since 1973. Highlights of his career include:
Founding member of VCUs Jazz Masters Sextet, which has received a permanent endowment to travel statewide performing concerts and educational workshops.
Cofounder and Member of The Great American Music Ensemble, which performed for 8 years as a resident jazz ensemble at the Terrace theater at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C.
Performances in concerts with Branford Marsalis, Jimmy Heath, Frank Foster, Milt Hinton, Benny Carter, Barry Harris, Christian McBride and many other jazz greats.
Performed as an opening act for Diane Reeves, Al Jereau, McCoy Tyner, Roy Ayers, The Crusaders, Kenny G. ......
Mr. Gailes has been a faculty member at Virginia Commonwealth University since 1979, and a cofounder of its highly acclaimed jazz program, teaching Jazz Improvisation, Jazz Master Class Small Jazz Ensemble, and Private Studio Lessons for saxophone, Flute,Piano, and coaching sessions for other instruments.
