SAYS SHE’S MS. BLAT Self titled As everything seems to have been done over and over, again and again, it never fails that somebody, somewhere, will take an instrument or their voice and make new music again. Here’s an example in Says She’s Ms. Blat, a band name mouthful, who spits fire and plays music with similar fervor. Imagine a sweetly guttural Chrissie Hynde-like vocalist backed by a more circus-minded band. Says She’s Ms. Blat is a pop induced, darkly tinged percussion and piano drenched duo whose playing sounds like it stumbles through walls or stands behind the shoulders of their listeners with painted gnarly fingers and whiskey soaked breath. Says She’s Ms. Blat is Lottie Leymarie on keys/vocals and Bret Puchir on percussion and their sound is powerful and thudding. Puchir’s playing seems to drive Leymarie, pushing and tempting. Leymarie’s singing is imaginative and ideal. Its both saccharine and stinging – especially on the standout track ‘Poseurs’ and dead-on delivery of ‘All These People.’ Someone needs to thank the band for crafting these poignant songs. Leymarie has the temperament and touch to sing with any instrument, sounding as though she could tackle any song and make it her own. Her style is thick in swagger and nonchalance, even as she tries not to sound this way. She’s the Brooklyn equivalent to Lucinda Williams, rich in soul and on fire. And while they’ve done much of note as a duo, crafting a wall of sound with a variety of ideas, their EP leaves the question of what they’ll do next, and perhaps with more players. Ups for days to BK's own Lottie Leymarie and Bret Puchir of Says She's Ms. Blat, for answering the unprovoked but vital question "What if Man Man had been born a lady-fronted baroque pop outfit?"
Too boisterous to accurately be compared to early Dresden Dolls, Leymarie and Puchi crank a melodic pepper grinder of piano and percussion over lyrics reveling in resent. Grudges fit Lottie's vocals well, and track for track, the two create grinning, blackened tales best told to the bottoms of Bordeaux glasses.
SSMB hit The Annex on Orchard 8/18.

It’s music you listen to and be affected by, something that sticks to you because there is some substance in what Puchir and Leymarie. It’s like a plate of ribs, but nothing is too sweet. Well, maybe there’s some sweetness in Says She’s Ms. Blat’s sound, but they’re not about to reveal where it’s coming from. This is one group I will be keeping an eye and ear out for.

"DJ Monkey …soul-stirring, excitingly edgy music…just disturbing (read ‘mind-f**king’) enough to demand attention. There is a whole spice rack of auditory flavors here, served up like fractured poetry on a collection of intensely listenable Hallmark cards from Hell." Bill Margold, Cinema Seen, L.A. X..Press
