We do! We are Scapegoat Theater Collective. While we may no longer be one of Western North Carolina’s newest theatre companies,we are definitely still the most exciting, and we are breaking new ground in the Asheville theatre scene. We believe that theatre can touch people’s lives, encourage political discussion and motivate social change.
Scapegoat Theater Collective was formed by a group of individuals whose lives have all been touched by the power of theatre. We saw an opportunity in Asheville to create accessible, relevant theatre that will touch new and diverse audiences. In the wake of our successful production of The Vagina Monologues that raised $5,000 for local domestic violence agencies and the excitement of the fun, campy production of Psycho Beach Party we decided that it was time to formalize our production team.
Why Scapegoat? To us, the name represents a commentary on our generation’s refusal to be personally accountable for their actions and society’s wellbeing. We are accepting the responsibility of creating a community of hope, justice and creativity. We have been called to action and we are prepared to be held accountable.
Scapegoat Theater Collective is committed to creating transformative theater in a community based model. We strive to bring a new expression of theatre to Western North Carolina.. Scapegoat is determined to be accessible to non-traditional audiences and to benefit our community. Part of our mission is to raise money and awareness for nonprofits in the Asheville community. Planned shows will benefit Western North Carolina Aids Project, OurVoice and other community organizations.
We are proud to have been a part of the inaugural year of the Stoneleaf Theatre Festival which brought theatre companies and fans from across the state to Asheville. At StoneLeaf we presented several sold out performances of Edward Albee’s Everything in the Garden. This dark comedy explores the underside of the American Dream and provided a challenging and rewarding vehicle for Scapegoat and our partners.
