After many years of practicing her songwriting craft, training her voice, and developing an original sound which blends opera, jazz, chant and trip hop, Scarlet Monk is finally entering the Chicago live music scene. Armed with years of music and performance experience, Scarlet is steadily and with great focus gaining a following and creating her destiny ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Lets keep her story short and sweet: Scarlet grew up on a farm in Poland with a lamb for a pet named "Kopytko". Since she was very young she always told everyone she'd be a singer, dancer and actress, and everyone thought she was quite special (as in “crazy”). She moved to Chicago when she was twelve, fast forward..... graduated NEIU Magna Cum Laude in 2006 with a degree in Vocal Performance and a Dance minor, decided that from that day forward she will only work part time (making some kick-azz cappuccinos!) and make only enough money to keep her apartment and eat so that she can spend the rest of her time on music……………………………………………………………………............................................. ……..Scarlet has been influenced by so many people, but especially Jerzy Grotowski, Kazuo Ohno, Tatsumi Hijikata, Billie Holiday, Charles Mingus, Ray Charles, Chopin, Diamanda Galas, Sidney Bechet, Edith Piaf, Antonin Artaud, Bill Holman, Dr.Toyah Wilson, her dance teachers Joel Hall and Jay Jarquin, her jazz band director Mayo Tiana, her voice teachers Phyllis Hurt, Clarice Hearne and Nancy Shaw, and her amazing, faithful friends and loved ones who so often volunteer to pick up the tab and say “When you make it you can pay me back” as if there is not a doubt in their minds.................................................................. …………………………………………………….....................................................................................So, why "Scarlet Monk"? Monk because of the discipline and dedication she strives for. Monk because of the quiet intensity her music possesses. Monk because she tends to stay quiet and observe. Monk, because of Artaud's version of the book "The Monk". Monk because of Thelonious Monk and Meredith Monk. Monk because she’s what you could call a recovering catholic, and because some of the fear, guilt and shame that was pounded into her ever since she was a kid will always remain with her no matter how hard she tries to get it out... And that's why Scarlet. Scarlet because of the Scarlet Letter. Scarlet because of the passion she feels for what she does. Scarlet because the scarlet color doesn't blend in with its surroundings, but instead it screams out. .......................................................................................................................…………Scarlet works with some truly talented and dedicated musicians and producers in Chicago and abroad. Special thanks go out to everyone who keeps writing, commenting, encouraging, and most of all listening. Thank you to Release, Ekiti Son and Blackdaylight for their amazing beats and to those currently immersed in the collaboration process ………………………………… “You always inspire me”……………………… ………………………………………………………………………………………….
So keep on, please keep on supporting the best you can, because when she used to fall asleep in her room on her little farm in Poland she always looked over at the lights of the city and knew that she just had to find a way to get there, she had to be where the lights are….. And now that she’s here, she doesn’t have any directions.………
Don't you hate it when lame ass Rock bands from Chicago, whom you foolishly befriended months ago, randomly appear in comment form to invite you out to their inane shows as if they believe you're gullible enough (you know gullible isn't in the dictionary, right?!) and/or lacking in a social life to actually come hang? Me too. Good thing we're not much of a band or this would be awkward! Awkward like the first dance between two hormone raging teens going through puberty, haha! Alas, it's us, Oui Si Only You, in our most impersonal social networking form. Sorry to get you all excited to read your new comment only to be disappointed like a jilted lover on prom night. It's not all bad, at least we didn't do one of those weird, "Do you like me?" comments, right? I don't think our fragile hearts could have taken the answer to that one! Any who, we're rocking (I know, debatable right, but whether it's master debatable remains the ultimate conundrum!) our last few shows for the year out at a few splendid, unknown little Chicago establishments called Double Door (1572 N. Milwaukee Ave; 21+) on Wed. Nov. 18th at 8pm and Reggie's Rock Club (2109 S. State St.; 17+) on Sat. Nov. 28th at 7pm. We could all perish happily . . . if that's possible . . . knowing you came out and mocked our uninspired /downright ignorant brand of music along with our A.D.D. riddled stage energy. Peace face.
Yo Scarlet Monkasaurus. I just found out that we're related...and as a special family only present we've made a new song for you called "End of Days" (start doing backflips now). It's an epic instrumental opus to the moment when our ancient Dino relatives saw a large fiery object plummeting towards them. Please come to our page, give it a listen and let us know if it makes you feel like something catastrophic is gonna happen. If the song upsets you too much we will be holding several s support groups (read: comcerts) in the near future. Check our page for locations, dates and times.
