Interests

  • General

..I love being silly, books, blogging, board games, cake decorating, clothes, concerts, conversation, cooking, crafts, culture, design, dinosaurs, Egyptology, family, hiking, letters, meeting people, message boards, military life, mini-golf, movies, museums, music, organizing, photography, piano, playing like an overgrown kid, politics, road trips, scrapbooking, shoes, shopping, speech pathology, television, theatre, travel, vintage things, words, writing, zoos...and things I haven't tried yet.
  • Music

..It might be easier to simply say that I love music. Period. I listen to rock, pop, country, hip-hop, rap, jazz, gospel... pretty much everything. Granted, I tire of some genres more easily than others, but I can't think of a single genre in which I haven't found something to appreciate. When I play piano, I enjoy Beethoven more than any other composer. I need to pick up my flute again. And when I sing, an old gospel tune never fails to bring to smile to my face.

  • Movies

..I dislike movies that take themselves too seriously. I don't mind thinking, but most often, I simply want to be entertained. That being said, I don't enjoy senseless films that assume my sense of humor hasn't developed beyond junior high school pranks or bodily functions. Most often, I'm a sucker for smart comedy and romance, drama that is moderately serious, or visually stunning "children's" films. Favorites range from classics such as "Gone with the Wind," "Breakfast at Tiffany's," and "Pillow Talk," to more modern favorites such as "Legally Blonde," "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," and "Serendipity." Most often, I will shy away from science fiction and horror.

  • Television

..I watch way too much TV. I really don't like silence too often, and the TV is usually on as background noise. My DVR is set for The Biggest Loser, Bones, Brothers & Sisters, Burn Notice, Chuck, The Closer, Criminal Minds, CSI, Desperate Housewives, ER, House, How I Met Your Mother, Law & Order, Life, Men in Trees, Monk, The Office, One Tree Hill, Project Runway, Psych, Top Chef, Tori & Dean, Shot at Love, So You Think You Can Dance, and The Ultimate Coyote Ugly Search. I can also get sucked in pretty easily to pretty much anything on the Travel Channel and a lot of things on the History Channel.

  • Books

..I don't get to read as much I'd like. I don't even get to focus on writing novels as much as I'd like anymore. But I most often enjoy smart romance, quirky "chick lit," biographies, or informative nonfiction about a subject hat truly interests me. However, my writing is probably most influenced by Neil Gaiman, Anne Rice, and Jane Green.

  • Heroes

..My heroes are my husband, my family, my friends, and all of the families who sacrifice to help others. Without the people who surround us, support us, care for us, protect us, push us, confront us, challenge us, comfort us, lift us up, tear us down, and stand beside us, we would be nothing.

About me:

..

I believe that everyone is best served by being themselves. I am just me -- no more, no less -- and I have become comfortable with that.

I have simple tastes and complicated tastes. I look for quality, but I want it at the best price. Sometimes I’m a little frivolous, but I also know how to crack down. My current addiction is anything related to our baby-on-the-way.

I think that too many people complain too much about life in the military -- especially deployments. No, military life isn’t always rainbows and roses, but neither is civilian life. Look for the positives, keep your priorities straight, roll with the punches: you’ll be fine.

I am a pillow junkie. Especially since becoming pregnant, there is barely room for my husband in our bed -- even if he is the best pillow ever, he can also be a bit lumpy and bony.

I have the best husband ever. He tells me I’m a big sap when I try to tell how much I love him, but I guess I’m okay with being a sap. He’s the best thing that ever happened to me (along with our expected child), and my world would fall apart without him.

My favorite quote is “It will all be okay in the end. If it’s not okay, it’s not the end.” Have a little faith.

I love almost all music, but my iPod touch is my favorite car gadget ever. And Tom has already figured out that a surefire way to get me to smile is to play “The Hamster Dance.” He’s also figured out that, one day, I will manage to get a video of him dancing to it in the car.

I used to be as much of a blanket junkie as I am a pillow junkie. But since my thyroid completion last March, I actually have temperature control. Weird.

I wish for many things in life and tend to daydream a lot. But mostly, I wish for the strength, wisdom, and sensibility to appreciate my life and people in it. Generally, I succeed.

I like to be treated well, and I like to treat others well. I think a soft, well-intended touch often means more than an overt gesture. I believe words are meaningful.

I believe in love, and I believe that you never truly know love until you’ve met the love of your life or become a parent.

I now know my mother wasn’t crazy. Every day, she can tell me “I told you so.”

I believe in God, and my faith is a source of great strength for me, but I don’t believe organized religion is infallible. I believe God is far more forgiving than most doctrine would like us to believe. I believe most religions are closer to each other than most people can see. I do not believe science and God preclude one another.

I am close to my family, and they guide me, but I am my own person. They are part of who I am, but they are not all of me. I value their opinions, but I make my own choices.

I have learned that a large part of happiness comes from within. You cannot be loved until you love yourself. You cannot succeed in what you truly want until you decide what you truly want. And you cannot expect the world to comply until you set your own priorities and follow them. Happiness is a choice.

I am me -- no more, no less.

Who I'd like to meet:

I'd like to meet fun people, odd people, people with stories, local people, far away people, talented people, people looking for friends, people looking for love, people who don't know what they're looking for, people who read my work, people who know me, people who would like to know me, people who think I might like to know them, people who can make me laugh, people who can make me cry, people who just make me think, outgoing people, quiet people, people with something to say.
