Scary River is an electronic dance project started by James Wolff.. Recording and touring since the bands creation in 2007, Scary River has an extensive recording catalogue including a three track EP recorded at Peabody (Where James studied composition with Grammy winning composer Nicholas Maw), lots of studio cuts, and a new album recorded with many different special guests this past winter. The new album was recorded at Lords of Baltimore Studios with Rob Girardi, it is called Get Control, and it set to be release to coincide with CMJ in October, 2009 in New York City. We will have more information soon on it, we are searching for vinyl distribution deals for it. And as you can notice the myspace could use an update so we are searching for active artists interested in collaborating on content for the July 17-19 dates.
Scary River was developed after James returned from Brooklyn after creating and succesfully touring on two indie-rock bands, Motion Commotion, and Super Volcano which served as a launching pad for the development of the Scary River concept. Motion Commotion was developed through Ishlab Studios in Downtown Brooklyn and eventually went on in 2005 to record and tour on an EP produced by Jessie Cannon (Piermont Records) while Super Volcano was an offshoot that saw three of the four members self-record a demo and perform in the East Coast region, and eventually performing on the 2007 CMJ festival at the Luna Lounge in Brooklyn through Reverb Nation.
2009 has already been an exciting time in the history of Scary River. With the digital release of Eye Sweat Lightning LP, on August 5th and the announcement of Get Control in October, the band is again booking shows and preparing to drive up their fanbase and again reach out to fans with manufacturing of new limited edition Vinyl and a fully new outfited Merch center. In its current form, Scary River is a study in post-minimalist long-form structural movement and evolution with dark electronic keyboard textures provided by a Poly-Evolver keyboard and uptempo blasting rhythm tracks. Using Line-6 Loop pedals on the voice and guitar, these soundscapes are developed through a sound and can carry the listener into strange and interesting places. New and uncharted territory which the band will concentrate on developing further in a future singles catalogue release entitled Neon Music Brings Light To A Dark World.
Summer 2009 will see Scary River touring again in August with label mate Darling Waste, and preparing to leave for a four week European tour to support the October release of the Get Control LP, engineered by Rob Girardi.
Self described indie pop post funk with a glamish twist and a dangerous attitude. Scary River is an electronic rock outfit from Baltimore with a full length commercial release called "Eye Sweat Lightning" distributed through Morphius Records, and promoted by Good Cop PR, and Ariel Cyber Publicity. A darling of Baltimore recent art and music explosion on the national scene, they are being managed by the FOCOTheory Agency and recording their next full length, "Get Control" due out in June, with Rob Girardi of Beach House and Double Dagger. Their latest full length was mastered by Dave Nachodsky at Invisible Sound studios and will be released in all major digital markets coinciding with an electronic cyber publicity campaign by Ariel Publicity in March to coordinate with a new single on the Morphius SXSW Compilation CD.
The group is in their mid 20s and are well established in the local Baltimore area, and frequently give tour support to touring national acts. James Wolff is a recent graduate from Peabody Conservatory with a degree in Composition where he studied with Grammy winner Nicholas Maw. He works studio engineering and A&R at Phoenix Group (EMI Publishing) with Shawn Campbell who was recently nominated for a Grammy in best RB album of the year (Karina Passian).
The lyrics are written with sharp wit, often times abstracted with meanings that extend beyond the surface, and cover a variety of subjects, often times refrencing news stories and current events. Having the ability to experiment in the studio for 6 full months, every day recording and listening, tuning into the right mood and feeling for each track, gave the band an opportunity to redefine their sound and explore new textures and atmospheres. Eye Sweat Lightning is an energetic, intelligent and well constructed record; you will find it makes for a fufilling listen.
