The first college accredited class for club and mobile DJ techniques. On September 10, 2001, Scottsdale Community College (SCC), the only community college in the nation to reside on Native American land, started a non-credit DJ class with DJ Rob Wegner. After several years as a successful non-credit class, the Maricopa County Community College District agreed to elevate the class to credit status. The "competencies," which were authored by Rob Wegner, were approved by the District and during the Fall 2004 semester, MUC 135 "Live-Performance Disc Jockey Techniques" was offered for two-credits in the college's Music Department. *** At roughly the same time, DJ Radar launched a second DJ class (non-credit) for "turntablists" at SCC. After his historical performance with the Arizona State University symphony orchestra, Radar taught his innovative musical lexicon/notation for DJ's for several semesters. In the Fall 2007, DJ Ruthless Ramsey -- an award winning turntablist and pioneer of beat-mixing and scratching on cassette decks -- relaunched the non-credit turntablism classes at SCC. *** One of the success stories of SCC's DJ classes revolves around the collaboration between DJ Georgia Nicole and Arizona house music legend, DJ Eddie Amador. Georgia Nicole, who was enrolled in MUC 135, met Eddie during a guest lecture. From this meeting, the two collaborated on an original house music track entitled "Spotlight." "Spotlight" eventually charted to number nine [9] on the Billboard Dance Music charts. *** The DJ classes at SCC continue to be successful and enjoys the support of the Phoenix area DJ community. Many guest speakers such as DJ Pete Salaz, DJ Z-Trip, Afrika Bambaataa, DJ Bobby Musselman of the Arizona Diamondbacks, DJ Greggy D, DJ AL3, DJ Steve LeVine, DJ Marcus McBride, Pistol Pete Kelly, DJ Astonish, DJ Mikyl, DJ Akshen, DJ Randy Feldman, DJ Rod Carrillo, DJ Eddie Amador, DJ Mickey 'Mixin' Oliver, DJ Emile, DJ Radar, DJ Dave Rajput, DJ Fashen, DJ Inertia, DJ Shad, DJ Matty, DJ Timothy Heit, George Blake, Raul Yanez ("Concerto for Turntable"), Aaron Seaford, DJ Trademark, Steve Ratz Jr. of DMA Magazine, DJ Tranzit, Angelo (of "Angelo and Veronica"), DJ Benjamin Cutswell, DJ Kevin Brown, DJ Mark Sanchez of the ADJA, DJ Evan Samurin of the Guitar Center, DJ Maji, DJ Jeremy, DJ Steel, DJ Joe Dipadova, DJ Senbad, DJ Soloman, DJ MC-B, DJ Mr. P-body, DJ J. Alan, DJ Brazilia, DJ Sterling, VJ Sam, DJ Wyatt Brice, DJ Miles Gilbert of SKM Entertainment, DJ Element, DJ Leo Blaze, and the late DJ John Stettler have sacrificed their valuable time to speak to the DJ and/or turntablism classes.
