2007 has been a big year for Schadenfreude -
Melbourne’s daring dandies of indie-pop and angular
post-punk. From playing well received support shows
including Canada’s Psycheand Sydney’s Lost Valentinos
to wowing Sydneysiders at the Factory during September’s
Under The Blue Moon festival, Schadenfreude’s rise
rapidly continues. Still to come in 2007 is the launch
of their debut single ‘Vertigo’ recorded at Melbourne’s
infamous Hothouse Studios, the release of their first film
clip for said single, further interstate shows in Brisbane and
Sydney as well as the now-usual swathe of gigs in
hometown Melbourne. 2008 will see the boys recording
further tracks and possibly their debut LP, plus plans
for overseas touring.
Formed in Melbourne in 2005, Schadenfreude are
a four piece post punk / indie band, brought together
by a common admiration for bands such as The Church,
Southern Death Cult, The Cure, and early INXS. Their
line up consists of lead singer, songwriter and guitarist Kitty Miller, lead guitarist and vocalist Rob ‘Dorian’ Gray, bassist Monk and drummer Thomas F Hendry.
Schadenfreude’s sound draws on influences from 50’s rock and roll, 80’s post punk and batcave, right up to the current crop of indie and new wave bands (like Editors and Franz Ferdinand.)
Kitty Miller’s songwriting consists of elegantly simple melodic structures combined with irresistible killer indiepop/new wave hooks. Add to that some cutting guitars for the frenzy factor, and – for those who like to think while they’re feeling -- Kitty writes well crafted lyrics which reward the more careful listener with layers of deeper meaning. From their ever popular Vertigo to slow moody numbers such as Autumn Fire, to the high energy Top Shoes, Schadenfreude perform with an energetic and driven stage sympatico, and convey their emotionally charged tracks with conviction.
Schadenfreude live have a tangible magnetism which has already seen their loyal following grow locally and internationally. Praise for Schadenfreude’s deft, dashing and damned impressive live shows includes:
---
"Distinctive in both image and sound, Schadenfreude own the stage.
Nothing’s forced; these lads are compelling to watch, infectious to hear. Miller’s scope as a performer and lyricist is perfectly complemented by the stylish presence and elegant riffage of Rob ‘Dorian’ Gray. It’s easy to see why the two decided to leave other bands to join debonair forces.
Kicking confession Top Shoes showcases the band’s intuitive mastery. Pared-back instrumentation makes a feature of Miller’s vulnerable purrrs and the band knows precisely when to thrash back in to accompany frustrated wails.
There’s no doubt in my mind - that these cats are ready to launch into the stratosphere, filling a long neglected sonic cavity." - Inpress Magazine
