As far as Schadenfreude are concerned, myspace is much less "a place for friends" than something that could be more accurately described as akin to a haven for nobs. However... as, over the years, Schadenfreude have been regularly described by those who have encountered them as "the biggest pair of twats I have ever met", they do not necessarily see this as a significant bar to their joining the growing fraternity of cyber-nobs inhabiting the swirling online guff-storm that have already taken the leaden-footed step into the mind-numbingly tedious environs of the myspace community.
Over the years, Schadenfreude have developed an un-?-healthy misanthropic preoccupation with the detritus of contemporary culture. Sort of like rubber-neckers driving by a car crash, Schadenfreude are all too eager to ogle the horrific mangled wreckage of human society solely in order to be equally repelled by what they find! To Schadenfreude, all forms of media are wonderful contributors to the contemporary car-crash of culture, and there’s no bigger pile-up than the continuous non-stop auto-smash of the cascading torrent of toss that is the world wide wank, the fantazmic pinnacle of the impulse to free expression, a never-ending cornucopia of dross and dubious information, half-baked opinions, cheap-rate porn, and techno-ephemera, a firestorm of cultural clutter that is the shining jewel of late 20th early 21st century human civilization. Schadenfreude can’t get enough of it, and are only too willing to contribute to it! Schadenfreude live off it and it feeds their desire to create more of it.
But myspace isn’t like the online guff-storm. Gone is the riotous anarchy of the unruly inter-mesh, and in its place is a strangely formal system of classification: users are pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, classified and numbered, categorized on age, sex, interests, and star sign. Most of its 200+ million users seem to be merely participating in the largest ever online census. Gone to is the visual chaos. All the store fronts are more or less the same, "an endless generic mall" of prescribed layouts only customizable like express-on covers for mobile phones. The express-on myspace layout is there to make it more ’accessible’ to users, and leave enough room for those all important adverts. It’s Warhol’s dream come to fruition, welcome to the murdoch-machine.
But don’t worry...! Schadenfreude are here to help. Whilst they delve deep into myspace on their continuing quest for the grotesque, the distorted, or the merely mildly uninteresting, in order to simultaneously sate and stimulate their thirst for digestible bilge, they hope to offer you as many possibilities as they can to link back from this page to the glorious unconfined environs of the swirling online guff-storm they know and love.
