I play guitar and sing lead vocal and I write the songs. However J. Pat Murphy (lead guitar and vocal) and Carolyn Schad (toy squeeze box, piano and vocal) help color and shape the songs with their musicianship and wonderful knack for two part harmony. We have been playing together now since about 1999 and recorded a CD of all original songs "Pennies On The Tracks" that came out in 2000. We use two different bass players and two drummers, depending on who is available for the gig.
I also do some performing and recording with Jeff Graham a lead guitar player and multi-instrumentalist. He recorded/produced/mixed my winning song the 13th annual Billboard Song Contest, "Thousand Headlights".
Influences
I have many influences I suspect and not all of them are musical. The writing of Flannery O'Conner has influenced my songwriting as much as anyone. Growing up in northeast Arkansas and being raised my a cotton farmer has also influence my writing. Some of my hero's in music are Neil Young, Gram Parsons, Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie, Elvis Presley, Otis Redding, and even Beck, to name a few. I have been told I sound alot like Jesse Winchester, but who knows. I just know that I have wanted to write and play songs ever since I learned my first 3 chords in 1973.
Sounds Like
Well as far as the band goes, we have been compared to Crosby, Stills and Nash with our emphasis on tight harmony vocals. That works for me. I think we are more Village People, myself. :-)
I am a Marital and Family Therapist in private practice. That is what I do for employment. Who I am is a writer and singer/songwriter. I write poetry, short stories, and I'm working on a novel. I have been playing guitar, singing, and writing songs for over 22 years. I recorded my first CD, "Pennies On The Track' in 2000 with my band Empty Pockets. My CD can be purchased at my wifes website midwest-fine-art.com. I am married to a talented and wonderful artist. She paints in oil and teaches painting. If you want to view her work you can go to her website mentioned above. I have two extroidinarily talented sons, both musicians and best of all they have great hearts. I also won 1st Place in the Ozark Mt. Folk Festival songwriting contest in 2005, and I won 3rd place in the rock category of the 13th annual Billboard Songwriting Contest. I grew up in Northeastern Arkansas, in a small farming community called Marked Tree. I consider growing up in the delta country of Arkansas to be a huge influence on who I am as a person and it infuses my songwriting and my poetry. I also believe my family has had a huge impact on me, with their colorful and wonderful ways of being.
