7,487 miles is the distance from the shores of Australia to the coast of California, but for Australian singer/songwriter Scott Brewer, the journey seems as natural as a bus ride. Scott's artistry converges at a crossroads of styles: the solid power of rock, the tunefulness and timelessness of classic pop and the confessional narratives of modern adult contemporary. Beneath his photogenic looks and easy-going Aussie charm lies a coiled musical intensity and a single-minded artistic focus.
Songwriters are often advised to write about what they know, and Scott's circuitous route around the Globe has been marked by a lot of living: enlisting in the army as a teenager, jumping out of planes as a paratrooper, representing Western Australia as a springboard and platform diver at the Men's Open Championships, studying modern and classical dance, performing as a stunt man on-stage, on television and in feature films such as The Matrix and Beastmaster , and modeling for Calvin Klein and Ferrari -- all achievements in a well-stocked resume.
But Scott is here because the music called him. "I was told I was very American," he avows. "I played my music for one of the producers on the TV show I was on who said ' You know you've got something-- so go swim with the big fish.' I wasn't getting the sound I was searching for, but as soon as I went to stateside, I knew I was almost there."
Although he'd performed extensively as a vocalist it was in 1999, at the urging of his girlfriend, that he sat down and wrote his first five songs. "I was doing theater at the time and I told her, 'I want something more, I need to do my own songs.' She said, 'Why don't you do it?" He submitted his first demo to the local station for a new artist showcase. "The lady listened, switched it off and said, 'I can't put it in the competition hour - I want to put it on the commercial show right way.' I figured I might have something."
When an Australian music magazine spotlighted Scott in a feature article, it intrigued a Canadian songwriter, Brent Jeffery, enough to go down under and investigate. When Scott visited Canada, the duo penned a sheaf of songs together. Traveling to Nashville, Scott recorded with two-time Grammy nominated producer, Todd Rubenstein. The resulting tracks reverberate with the studio sheen of Nashville's finest, but the songs, stories and voice bear the authentic stamp of Scott Brewer.
Scott has decidedly found his niche with his debut album '10 Minutes Later' due to be released August 2006 by Sunstar Records. Produced by Justin Harvey - (Alien Ant Farm, Sugar Ray & Johnny Five) this album resonates Scott's soulful yet powerful rock presence and is set to hit the charts, with already having huge success with his single 'Playing on My Mind'.
"For me, the biggest thing was opening up emotionally," says Scott. "They say music is the universal language -- and for me, that's so true." From on-screen gladiator to on-stage balladeer, Scott Brewer's personal journey mirrors the intriguing road map of his life. Beyond boundaries and borders, with music as a compass, his horizons are limitless.
