'Biblical Theology - Old and New Testaments' by Geerhardus Vos

A new one on the Hedley hit list in my attempts to start 'digging a little deeper' in my reading (and as it's collected dust on my shelf for a number of years I thought I should get my monies worth!). From what I understand this bloke is Goldsworthy's intellectual Grandfather. In his opening few chapters he gives a whole bunch of great reasons as to why this discipline is so essential. One which stood out is the fact that he sees that it can 'relieve to some extent the unfortunate situation that even the fundamental doctrines of the faith should seem to depend mainly on the testimony of isolated proof texts'. I am sure that this prophecy will ring true as the book progresses, especially in our current climate where unpalatable doctrines like penal substitutionary atonement are constantly under attack and where defences are often simply a weak flinging of verses. It is with Biblical Theology, placing specific passages within their place in the progression of salvation history that answers lie and where substance is added. Sounds good! Let the games begin!

'Christ the Controversialist' by John Stott. _______________________ In the process of re-reading this classic book. It meant a lot to me when I read it as a young christian - not sure if this was because I was impressed by Jesus standing up for truth in the face of pretty intense opposition, or just because as a young bloke I liked the fact that Jesus was not afraid to kick some butt when it was neccessary... I have a feeling it was probably more the latter. _________________________
'Moody' by John Pollock. _______________________ Gotten into the old biography lately - find them encouraging as well as thought provoking. This guy Moody was a legend! He wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer, but God still used him in some amazing ways. A lot to learn from this guy about preaching, godliness and zeal.
