Performance opportunities for upcoming young musicians
SC&T have discussed incorporating a ‘Pathways to Performance’ slot with the Lemon Tree, and they are happy for us to include this in our Saturday lunchtime performances.
‘Pathways to Performance’ will give young performers a short slot during the main 1.00-2.00pm lunchtime performance slot. Jimmy Mitchell has already introduced two spots by fiddling youngsters (both taught by past or present SC&T tutors) and there are plans to include more slots in 2010.
If you tutor young musicians or know of any young players/singers of trad or trad style music who would enjoy a Lemon Tree 'gig', please pass info about this opportunity on to them.
Senior students at Sgoil Chiùil na Gaidhealtachd (the National Centre of Excellence in Traditional Music) will be performing in a special Homecoming concert in the Sanctuary, Queen’s Cross Church, Aberdeen, at 7.00pm. The visiting students boast fiddlers, whistle players, pianists, pipers, a guitarist and a cellist amongst their number, as well as several traditional singers. These musicians may still be in their teens but the evening’s entertainment promises some innovative instrumental combinations and seriously good voices. The quality and range of talent at Sgoil Chiùil na Gàidhealtachd is astonishing and the school has already spawned numerous successful bands.
Three groupwork workshops catering for all ability levels.
Through the day, the students will be leading groupwork workshops catering for all ability levels and instruments. Participants will be encouraged to build their performance skills and confidence playing with others, as well as increasing their repertoire of traditional tunes.
The Deeside Sessions are taking place in pubs up and down Deeside throughout August & September. All SC&T musicians very welcome to join in. Full details in SC&T newsletter or www.discoverroyaldeeside.com/deeside-sessions/
SC&T hosted traditional music performances in the marquee at this year's Highland Games (Hazlehead Park, Sunday 21 June). The combination of glorious sunshine and fabulous music and song from SC&T tutors, participants and friends drew the crowds, with well in excess of 600 visitors to our marquee!
Big thanks go to all the performers, organisers, volunteers, the sound engineer and, of course, the audience, who all helped to make the day such a huge success. Aberdeen City Council want to make 'Music in the Marquee' a permanent fixture at the Games, and SC&T have already been invited back in 2010!
Danny Parrott, events officer at Aberdeen City council said…. “One of the most popular attractions was the music tent, which had people playing traditional Scottish folk music throughout the day.” P&J, 22 June
