Scottish Youth Theatre's Blurbs |
About me:
Scottish Youth Theatre, now in its 33rd year, is Scotland’s national theatre ‘for and by’ young people. The company is based at the Old Sheriff Court in Glasgow, but strives to provides theatre arts opportunities to young people from all Scottish communities.
Scottish Youth Theatre’s main areas of activity are the Summer Festival, National Roadshow, Weekly Drama Classes and SYT Productions.
In August 2005 Scottish Youth Theatre moved into a new building in Glasgow. The new base is part of the Persimmons Homes development of the Glasgow Old Sheriff Court and has provided Scottish Youth Theatre with workshops and rehearsal spaces, offices and a studio theatre. Our flexible spaces are available to hire for functions, events and conferences.
The Summer Festival takes place between July and August each year. The Summer Festival provides a variety of theatre arts courses for young people aged between 12 and 21 at a number of locations throughout Scotland. The courses are both residential and non-residential, last for two or five weeks and provide activities to suit the various skills and needs of young people.
The National Roadshow enables Scottish Youth Theatre to fulfil a national remit by providing free drama workshops and information sessions to young people in schools, local youth theatres and community groups throughout Scotland. The National Roadshow takes place in the autumn of each year.
Scottish Youth Theatre runs weekly drama classes in both Glasgow and Edinburgh attended by nearly 600 young people aged between 3 years and 25 years of age. The weekly drama classes run for three terms per year, each term lasting 10 weeks. In Edinburgh the classes take place at the Festival Theatre and in Glasgow the classes take place in The Old Sheriff Court.
SYT Productions is Scottish Youth Theatre's high profile theatre company of young people aged between 16 and 25 years. SYT Productions provides further training and experience for young people from all over Scotland who have demonstrated particular talent or aptitude in theatre arts. The company allows young people to experience working on a professional production in a variety of venues and stages from community venues to professional theatres across Scotland.
Scottish Youth Theatre also provides workshops and projects in partnership with other organisations including local youth theatres, schools, local authorities and residents in SIPS areas.
Scottish Youth Theatre is a charity and is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. The Board have formed various committees to help and support the work of the core staff members. The core staff members work with freelance workers to deliver the company's activities.
