Scott Kay is again looking to new horizons. After forming the rockabilly and honky tonk band "Scott Kay and the Continentals" in 2002, the St. Louis Missouri band quickly gained a cult following of greasers and honky-tonkers. The Continentals spent several years paying their dues and eventually shared stages with such acts as Junior Brown, Wanda Jackson, the Blasters and Chuck Berry. After developing a solid reputation in St. Louis and Kansas City and earning a 2006 St. Louis Music Public Choice Award for "Best Americana Band," the Continentals decided in the fall of 2008 to quit while they were ahead to pursue some individual musical paths.
Growing up on a farm and ranch outside of the southern Illinois town of Ava, Scott spent many years honing a musical style that was based upon the traditional country and gospel that surrounded him while growing up. While his days were spent hunting, fishing, driving a tractor, mending fences (literally), and checking cattle on horseback, his nights were spent singing and playing lead guitar in rural Illinois and Missouri honky-tonks. Later, after moving to the suburbs of St. Louis to attend college, Scott could even be found singing Italian arias as part of a short stint as a classical music performer.
Scott is now exploring some new musical avenues that fall outside of the strict rockabilly format. Though traditional country is the source that all of Scott's music is based upon, he has always been a real-deal hillbilly rocker at heart. Over time, Scott has blended his love of everything from Joe Ely to the Counting Crows to form his own unique style.
Currently, Scott is busy writing songs for an upcoming solo album that will blend all of his wide-ranging influences. Stay tuned - it'll be interesting.
