Me. My co-writer (sometimes). My piano. His or her guitar (sometimes). And the (sometimes) delusion that we just wrote a number one hit! The rush of writing that new song that speaks to you. The feeling of waking up the next morning excited about it. The phone call to my wife to read her the lyrics before I even get home. Walking in the house and asking my kids - "Hey, ya wanna hear a new song?" The daydream where someone cuts the song, it's a hit, and my wife gets to quit working. That's the best one. That feeling knowing that God gave me some strange wonderful gift that I can't explain and I don't deserve and I can't get enough of.

Me? I love my wife of 19 years. I love my 19 year old and 16 year old daughters. I love my friends and my job. I get to play music for a living. After all these years, I still think that's pretty freakin' cool. It's just a little cover band down here in Dallas, TX, but it's full of great people with a whole lot of God-given talent. And we've gotten to do some incredible things over the years.
And then there are songs. I love songs. I find as I get older that a good country song has more soul in it than just about anything I've ever heard. It sounds like home. I get to write songs with a bunch of good friends in Nashville. I love the journey of walking into a little room with someone and wandering down countless little paths of melodies and story ideas and not usually having a clue where it's headed until it hits you... and I love the rush of that moment and every moment that comes after it. I love sitting at the Bluebird Cafe or Douglas Corner or any writer's night in Nashville when a song grabs me and makes me listen because it has something to say that I apparently HAVE to hear. It's just an amazing thing.
And I love God. Because He loved me first. In a way I cannot comprehend but I sure am grateful for. He not only saved me in every way a man can be saved, but then saw fit somehow to bless me with all the things I just listed above and so much more. Overwhelming. What can I say? Life is good. Very, very good.
