Scott Stein is a 25-year-old pianist, singer and songwriter steeped in numerous musical genres. Born and raised in Ohio, Scott cut his teeth while studying with Akron piano legend Pat Pace through his formative years and playing in local bands during high school. While pursuing a degree in classical composition at The Ohio State University, he won numerous awards for his writing while studying jazz piano with Columbus greats Hank Marr, Bobby Floyd and Mark Flugge, all while playing the Columbus club scene. His two self-produced releases, "Temporary Romance" (2004) and "Live at the 5th Ave. Coffee Shop" (2005) won him praise from local media outlets in Columbus and in Akron and landed him significant airplay on Akron’s 91.3 WAPS FM. After graduating from OSU in 2006, Scott went into the studio with his band to cut his first full-length studio album, "Two Lane Heartache Waltz". In the spring of 2007, Scott was awarded the Guild of Temple Musicians Young Composer’s Award for his choral piece, "Shirat Hayam". The following summer, he relocated to New York to pursue his music full time. Scott’s lyrical prowess and blues-steeped chops have already won him attention from Dan Herman’s Radio Crystal Blue and the Bronx Times. In addition, he is active as an accompanist, arranger and session musician. He currently plays piano for NY artists The Shells, The Ramblers, and Lilian Borunda. Several of Scott’s original compositions can be heard in the forthcoming documentary, "Voice Teacher", directed by Daniel Mendelson, which will premiere in April 2008 and will be appearing at the 2009 Syracuse International Film Festival.
Hey Scott, I just wanted to let you and your friends know that "The Open Mic Documentary" won the Cable TV Award for the "Best Arts Coverage: Series". That's not the best part of the news. The video that they played as I went up to accept the award WAS OF YOU!!! The very video on this page. The director said it was an amazing performance (which I of course agree). Thanks for visiting San Francisco and please let me know if you plan on being in the area again. Good luck in NY---Slim
My series "The Open Mic Documentary " has been nominated for a Cable TV Award as the "Best Arts Coverage: Series"(and includes a performance by you)!!! But being nominated for an Award is second only to WINNING the Award! So I'm asking for your vote. Go to my site www. theopenmic. net and follow the link or go directly here to get the info. www. theopenmic. net/vote. php I'd appreciate the vote. If you would care to spread the word I'd also appreciate that. Voting ends Friday September 5.
Nice seeing you last night, Scott! I think you experienced the last level of induction into the scene after that RG show. ;) Hope you and the guys have a great tour! Thanks for the IndieSoundsNY mention, too.
