   About Scott Trayer

Scott Trayer is a bassist, ethnomusicologist and educator. He has earned two degrees from the University of North Texas (B.M., jazz studies, 2000; M.M., jazz studies with ethnomusicology related field, 2006) and has also studied at Manhattan School of Music and the University of New Orleans. He has taught at Longwood University, coached small jazz ensembles at the University of Michigan, and has held teaching assistantships at the University of North Texas and the University of New Orleans. In 2005, Scott was the recipient of a Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation grant.

Scott's extensive travels as a professional musician have taken him throughout much of the United States, as well as Canada, Mexico, Belize, Costa Rica, Panama, Russia, Estonia, Germany, Finland, Denmark, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Portugal, Monaco, Italy, Croatia, Greece, Turkey, Jamaica, Barbados, the Bahamas, Bermuda, and the Cayman Islands. Part of 2007 was spent touring with Grammy-award nominated singer/songwriter Adrienne Young, and during 2008 he spent over five months touring Europe with a miniature big band. He appears on several recent recordings including guitarist Daniel Bruce's "A Single Thread" (NohJoh Music), drummer/composer Joel Fountain's "Saturn Return" (SITMOM Records), and pianist Lenny Marcus's 2007 CD "Deeper Still" (Flat 5 Press & Recording). More recently, he has recorded with jazz pianist Jimmie Landry whose CD is due to be released in early 2009, and he has completed a film soundtrack project with pianist/composer Lenny Marcus. Scott has also performed with Royce Campbell, Arturo Sandoval, John D'earth, Hod O'brien, Dave Larue, Makoto Ozone, Gunnar Mossblad, Stephanie Nakasian, Johnny Vidacovich, Marchel Ivery, Joe McBride, Stefan Karlsson, and Dave Stryker.

Aside from his professional activities as a bassist and composer/arranger, Scott is also an amateur drummer and saxophonist and also enjoys running—he has competed in marathons across the United States and Canada.

Scott is currently active as a freelance bassist, arranger, and recording artist, and also as a music scholar, and as an educator. He is currently involved in research projects investigating the improvised modern music of Norway and Sweeden, and old-time music in Virginia and North Carolina.

Great hearing from you! Yeah, I am mixing some stuff that that group recorded last year, so hopefully new clips will be up soon. The trumpet player is Josh Reed, great guy, former roomate of mine...he's up at Eastman now for grad school studying with Clay Jenkins.
