This CD opens where it belongs, with pure harp bliss by a true seasoned professional! Flip the Switch is Scott Daniel's workings from years of jamming, listening and perfecting his great sound. The awesome way he bends notes will kick your butt! I chose to review this CD just because our perk for reviews is to keep what 'cha reviewed. Very nice!
The opening title track, "Flip The Switch" sets the tone and lets you know you ain't listening to any beginner. 6 tracks on this CD are originals by Scott Daniel, and man oh man can this guy wail! One of the nice things with his originals is the great melody and mixing of nice vocals, great harp, and very very tasty guitar.
Speaking of tasty guitar, one of Kansas City's premier guitarists, Dave Hays, has two of his originals on this classy CD. Putting these two guys together pleases the ears and isn't over-sampled by giving the brunt of the mix to any one individual. The mixing and digitizing is done by a great production company her in KC, Soundgate Productions.
Steve McBride of Soundgate really knows how to bring out the best in performers. The mixing is brilliant and the layout of the songs makes for a great novel of listening pleasure. Its outstanding recording and awesome CD packaging is all first class!
Of course this great sound is very well backed by two other excellent musicians, Matt Browning on Bass and Ghan Bunyarattaphantu on the drums. I know, the drummer's name is a 'take a second look at' one, but listening to the songs and being able to shake your hips this way or stomp your foot that way wouldn't be there or at least the same without these two seasoned guys as well.
All in all it's an outstanding CD, and one you will feel good about adding to your collection!

The Scottyboy Daniel Blues Band sounds like a well oiled West Coast Blues combo, as good as any major blues act. Scottyboy's Astatic T3 mic sounds fantastic, but as Adam Gussow always says "It's the Indian, not the bow" His mouth tone and phrasing are simply first class and a pleasure to listen to. Quite impressive. And his singing is just as strong. Plus his original songs are cool and enjoyable. The rhythm section is tight and Dave Hays guitar leads are so tasty, I could listen to them again and again. To sum it up, "Flip The Switch" should be a must buy for every blues harp fanatic as well as for lovers of the old school sound played with passion and respect.

Blues Harp as big as that of William Clarke and Rod Piazza, that's what we get to hear on "Flip The Switch" the debut of this band from Kansas City, Missouri. Scottyboy Daniel and his bandmates, Guitarist Dave Hays, bassist Matt Browning, and the drummer with the almost immense name Ghan Bunyarattphantu are together a well oiled machine, which plays the Blues in a most experienced way. They bring all possible genres of the Blues, from West Coast swing and jazz to pure Rockabilly and Rock 'n' Roll tinted things and bring them with a natural ease.
Scottyboy Daniel is a strong representative of the newer generation of Blues Harp players and Guitarist Dave Hays fills him perfectly with his beautiful guitar and slide playing and is a strong element within the group. Both Scottyboy and Dave handle the singing and, as a clever example of this we get to "Cried Last Night" one of the songs where Dave gets the lead vocal. This also marks one of the stronger songs on this CD.
Blue Midnight, a cover of the great Little Walter song, is as the title suggests a slow blues which features delicate harp and guitar from both gentlemen, a real late night Blues. In the tradition of Jim Suhler and George Thorogood comes "I'm Gonna Get Drunk" which features more beautiful slidework from Dave and Scottyboy blowing from his soul on this uptempo song.
Other strong tracks on "Flip The Switch" are "Train Fare Home", a real train song in the rockabilly tradition which strongly recalls the Elvis Presley version of "Mystery Train". The title track "Flip The Switch" and the moody "Darkness Falling" have Scottyboy bringing out the warm sound of the chromatic, which is one of my personal favorites. The sturdy rocking side is covered on the tracks "Days On End" and the harp instrumental "K Street Stomp" which is in the same department as Magic Dick's "Whammer Jammer", these are all great songs on this CD which is a must for all lovers of the real Bluesharp.
Scottyboy Daniel Blues Band's Friend Space (Top 24)
Every day we are jumping from one task to another – looking at the watch as a guide. No wonder heart attack is one of the main causes to death. We forget to pause, to look around and to enjoy friendship and family. The world is beautiful – you only have to allow yourself to see it - to experience it. Look at the watch, painted by Jette – given the title “Time is relative”.
Take care my friend, make time and have a great weekend.
